(Summary of an article published in Positive Health Magazine)

This article outlines the dangers of the mineral oils found so ubiquitously in the majority of cosmetic products.

Mineral oil (classed as a petrochemical pollutant and xenohormone) can have negative effects on HORMONES and the skin's ability to BREATH, attract moisture and DETOXIFY. It can also slow down CELL RENEWAL and be the second (after the sun) most likely cause of premature ageing. In fact sunscreens produced from mineral oil may promote skin cancer as well as colon and breast cancer. However, no cosmetic manufacturers put health warnings on their products, and in the US, the FDA does not require this information to be on packaging.

Mineral oil is just one of the harmful ingredients that are used in products found in the home - bubble bath, bodywash, shampoo, soap, facial cleanser and detergents. Others include: SD40 alcohol, talc, DEA, MEA and TEA (foaming agents), artificial fragrances, artificial colour pigments, polyethylene glycol and Triclosan.

Of the 7000 odd ingredients used on the skin, the author states that only five or six have been tested for long-term safety and no synergistic testing has been done. Among these ingredients are 125 suspected carcinogens, 20 that cause adverse nervous reactions and 25 that are connected to birth defects.

The author lists many well-known brands of cosmetics that contain harmful ingredients.

The article concludes by warning consumers to educate themselves, read packaging and look for plant-derived ingredients (botanicals).

"Mineral Oil and why you should avoid it"
Source: http://www.herballuxuries.com/mineral-oil.htm

Mineral Oil or "Paraffinum Liquidum", a common ingredient in commercial lotions, creams and baby-care products:

The human skin is the largest organ in the body and must have proper nutrition to carry out its many important functions. We should be just as concerned about what goes on our skin as what we eat and drink. The fact is that most of the ingedients in the products we use are absorbed by the skin into the body.

Large cosmetic companies are continuing to use synthetic and petrochemical ingredients in personal care products. Pick up any bottle of lotion, cream, shampoo, conditioner, or toothpaste in your house right now and see how many natural ingredients they contain. Based on the FDA's personal care products packaging standards, the further the name of an ingredient is down the list on a products' label, the lesser of that ingredient the product contains. If this is true how much synthetic material have you fed your skin today? The skin acts as a filter for the body for even the smallest molecule not seen by the naked eye is being absorbed and in some cases is accumulating in our bodies.

Mineral oil is a common ingredient in commercial lotions, creams and baby care products. It is a clear, liquid oil with no scent and will not spoil. It is produced as a byproduct of the distillation of gasoline from crude oil. Mineral oil is leftover liquid, and because it is abundant, it is very inexpensive. In fact, it is more expensive to dispose of mineral oil, than to purchase it.

Mineral oil is the main ingredient in many baby care items as well. Baby oil, Vaseline (petroleum jelly), baby wash liquid soap, and baby lotions all contain mineral oil as a key ingredient. As mentioned above, manufacturers can buy it very inexpensively and it will not spoil.

The problem is that mineral oil is foreign to the human body and has many harmful effects, especially in infants. Some of the effects of mineral oil may be a little surprising.

Mineral oil acts as a thin layer on the skin. It is difficult to absorb and clogs the pores, which slows the skin's ability to eliminate toxins. Remember, the skin is the body's largest organ and plays an important role in maintaining overall health! Once the oil is absorbed, it is broken down by the liver and passes through the intestinal tract, it will absorb all of the fat-soluble vitamins found there. It is essentially stealing important vitamins from the body, which the body will not be able to replace. This can eventually lead to nutritional deficiencies. Studies have also shown forms of pneumonia caused by mineral oil decreasing lung function, known as lipoid pneumonia. Because of these dangers, the medical community has condemned the use of mineral oil taken orally or as an ingredient in medications.

To give you additional information regarding mineral oil you can use the links below.

This link is to an article on the Personal MD website that calls for warning labels on products that contain mineral oil. Personal MD Article on Mineral Oil: http://www.personalmd.com/news/a1998122802.shtml

This link is to an article on the senior health website that describes the long term effects of mineral oil. Although it is speaking of taking it internally, the effects of using it externally is the same. Senior Health Library: http://seniorhealth.about.com/od/digesti...in_oil.htm

This link is to a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) on mineral oil. JT Baker MSDS For Mineral Oil: http://www.jtbaker.com/msds/englishhtml/m7700.htm

This link is to an FDA finding regarding the use of mineral oil in the food industry. This is very alarming. It's here because it's relative to this issue of whether mineral oil is healthy for your body, inside or out. FDA and Mineral Oil: http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~rdb/opa-g040.html

The decision is yours as to what products you want to use on your skin. Some well known persons say that mineral oil is perfectly okay to use because it forms a film/barrier on the skin that seals in moisture and it repels water, etc. Your skin is a living organ not a car part, it's alive and must be allowed to live and function as intended or there will be consequences. Those can range from a simple rash to discolorations, or cysts and sores to cancer. The body will react one way or the other when it's not being cared for properly or fed bad food (skin care products). In some individuals reactions may be immediate for others it may be over a period of years.

Hi ladies Helen has asked me to ad to this thread.
As you can see Mineral oil is bad for skin and body. But it is generally safe if you don't use it in large quanities. For example. Cocoa butter|vitE Vit E is an antioxident Which breaks down some of the effects of mineral oil. There is very small quanities in SOME lotions, This will not harm you internaly, But it could cause you to break out in a very nasty rash. ( little red bumps ) It DOES clog your pores. So do take some caution when using it. DO NOT use mineral oil as a carrier oil. Use sweet almond oil, grape seed oil, avocado oil, johoba oil, coconut oil, sesame oil, olive oil (virgin), Well ? I think Helen pretty much said it all Tongue Just remember girl's Don't freak out LOL. cocoa butter w\ vit e is safe the most it will do is give you a rash, I know thats not good either but it won't cause any damage. Hope this helps out. Take care And Big booby hugs xsxsxsxsxs Lisaxxxxx
