#21

The only extract Bassett's has is this: http://www.bassettshealthfoods.com/shop/product_view.asp?id=28448&StoreID=0VC468N1DRVF8JBWNKATUJAA7VEAFWX9&private_product=0

The best capsules are these: http://www.bassettshealthfoods.com/shop/product_view.asp?id=16926&StoreID=0VC468N1DRVF8JBWNKATUJAA7VEAFWX9&private_product=0

I can't order from Swanson's anymore unless and until I ever have my own job again. Boyfriend won't order online for me.

EDIT: After locating the extract Bassett's carries on another site I have discovered its potency and cost, for the prices of each, you get about twice the potency from the capsule product. It's a shame I can't get better reishi where I live or order online right now.

Hi,

I was wondering if I could get a copy of the Certificate of Analysis for this product? That would be preferred, but if I can't get that, can I at least get confirmation that this product does in fact have 10% triterpenes? And earlier version of the product description included that, while another didn't even mention double extraction, and the latest says it's double-standardize but still doesn't include the triterpene content anymore.

If it is in fact double standardized and has the 15% polysaccharides currently on the label and in the description, and the 10% triterpenes that used to be in the description but has never been on the label, it would be a good idea to put the triterpene content back in the description and add it to the label. I'm specifically after the triterpenes myself, and if this product does in fact have 10%, that makes it the most potent extract for triterpene ratio period, and for the price, it would be unbeatable by any other product featuring reishi that is standardized for triterpenes.

Thank you for your time,

Abigail

Dear Abigail,

Thank you for contacting us!

We regret to inform you that we are unable to provide the Certificate of Analysis for the Swanson Superior Herbs Super Potent Reishi Mushroom Complex item #SWH237. Unfortunately, it cannot be released to our customers due to a legally binding contract with our manufacturer that prohibits us from doing so. Providing the Certificate of Analysis gives access to proprietary information that can at times be patent protected.

After reviewing this supplement, we found that it is now only standardized to the percentage of polysaccharides and the amount of triterpenes is not provided. We can guarantee that the supplement will include exactly what is shown on the label claims.

We apologize for any disappointment this may cause. Please contact us if you have further questions.

Our quality, value and customer service have made Swanson Health Products a trusted source of nutritional supplements since 1969. To help us build this privileged relationship with you, we welcome your comments and suggestions, as it is our pleasure to serve you at any time.

Huh? I just verified that one of the major products folks have been using for reishi contains no triterpenes which means no anti-androgen effect and you think there's more? Do you want me to go through and review every single product in Swanson's catalog with them? LOL!

What you think that's the end of the story???, you didn't prove anything.

No, I didn't miss that, but I think you missed this:

Quote:After reviewing this supplement, we found that it is now only standardized to the percentage of polysaccharides and the amount of triterpenes is not provided.

And perhaps never even knew this:

Quote:Extraction determines the therapeutic potency, since we cannot digest non-extracted mushrooms properly.
See this -highly recommended!- link for the details about this.

Therefore extraction is essential for a therapeutic effect, and dual extraction is the best option - it will make both water-solubles and insolubles bioavailable.

Hot water extracts (incl. home made Reishi tea), tinctures and powdered products at best contain only low concentrations of bioactives and the bioavailability is a major problem - if we cannot absorb all "the good stuff" then how can we benefit from it ?

From the link in quote:

Quote:The most common and cheapest extraction technique is hot-water extraction: the hot water will 'melt' the chitin and release the water-soluble bioactive components. The highest yield of bioactive ingredients is achieved when a high temperature combined with high pressure (211-373 ºF and pressure up to 50 psi to prevent disintegration of the moleculal structure of the bioactive constituents) is used. As a second step hot ethanol extraction is used in more sophisticated mushroom products: this will release the non-water solubles as well; basically, all bioactives will become bioavailable when this step is also included. Do not confuse this with an alcohol tincture: simply adding mushroom powder to alcohol will not have a lot of effect. Unlike cellulose (herbal products) chitin does not degrade in alcohol.

I don't know where I saw it, but somewhere I saw that triterpenes only become bioavailable with hot ethanol extraction. If I knew where I'd quote THAT to you as well.

In the first quote, Swanson's confirmed this product is only single-extraction standardized to polysaccharides. As THOSE are water-soluble, they clearly used hot water extraction ONLY. That means no triterpenes.

I didn't miss that thank you very much. Each extraction method pulls out certain compounds, the polysaccharides are therapeutic, terpenoids are anti-inflammatory, which is only pulled out using alcohol. A triple extraction is probably best.

Hearing more statement is if not Swanson Reshi?, you find a product that can be verified. Same goes with PM, the jury is still out on a verifiable product.

You can stow that snotty attitude, no need for it.

Anti-tumor and immunoregulatory activities of Ganoderma lucidum / Reishi and its possible mechanisms. ( Lin ZB, Zhang HN) Department of Pharmacology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Peking University Health Science Center,Beijing, China.

Abstract: Ganoderma lucidum (G lucidum) is a medicinal fungus with a variety of biological activities. It has long been used as a folk remedy for promotion of health and longevity in China and other oriental countries. The most attractive character of this kind of medicinal fungus is its immunomodulatory and anti-tumor activities. Large numbers of studies have shown that G lucidum modulate many components of the immune system such as the antigen-presenting cells, NK cells, T and B lymphocytes. The water extract and the polysaccharides fraction of Ganoderma lucidum exhibited significant anti-tumor effect in several tumor-bearing animals mainly through its immunoenhancing activity. Recent studies also showed that the alcohol extract or the triterpene fraction of G lucidum possessed anti-tumor effect, which seemed to be related to the cytotoxic activity against tumor cells directly. Preliminary study indicated that antiangiogenic effect may be involved antitumor activity of G lucidum.
