Thyroid hormones drop, spike in prolactin, whaaat?!

#1

Hello, beautiful people!

I used to be part of this community because I wanted to do something with my tuberous breasts. I did mainly USP progesterone cream massages and because my breasts were almost cup A and very symmetrical, I got some sort of nice full shape and I was done with it.

These years, I'm trying to cure myself from Hashimoto (hypothyroidism). I did excessive research and I switched my lifestyle, following all the guidelines - xenoestrogens, toxicity in environment, estrogen dominance, leaky gut, lipid metabolism etc.

Last 2 months I incorporated things like Vitex, USP progesterone cream (around 20-30mg, only in luteal phase), I3C, adaptogens, omega 3, vit.D, tulsi, alfalfa and so on. I actually felt really good until..... I had my routine check up with thyroid specialist. Suddenly I have big drop in thyroid hormones and a crazy spike in my prolactin. The doctor was shocked, alarmed.

My last 6 bloodtests, done every 6 months since autumn 2021 till now, spring 2024:

TSH:   0.219;   0.23;   0.191;   0.125;   0.491;   7.888
S-fT4:   19.90;   14.91;   19.42;   17.03;   17.03;    11.66

The lab also noticed my prolactin so they added it to my results. I have no data from before, but this week it was:

S-Prolactin: 1081

Can anybody understand the connection between the results (my thyroid actually got worse, suddenly, when it was getting better and better last few years) and the prolactin? Is it really bad? Is it - maybe (I'm hoping) - some good sign? Oh god...
I cannot get to any naturopath here. My country is really some sort of historical time machine :/

Hello Zvon.

The connection is maybe that low thyroid hormone levels can often lead to elevated prolactin levels. This is because when the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough of the thyroid hormones, the body produces more TRH (thyrotropin-releasing hormone) to compensate, which stimulates the release of TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) but also increases the release of prolactin. So a drop in thyroid hormones and an increase in prolaction do logically go together.

Thank you for your answer! So you do not believe it is connected with the progesterone cream? I haven't overdosed myself?

My thyroid just dropped (from unknown reason) and it caused a chain of reaction? I have to study more the biochemistry of our bodies. Hormones are still a challenge to me...

Using progesterone cream isn't known for causing an increase in prolactin. I haven't come across women reporting that, so it doesn't seem likely. It doesn't cause a drop in thyroid hormones either.

Because you have an increase in prolactin and a drop in thyroid hormones, it does suggest that there's some interplay between these two which has resulted in both happening at the same time.

Thank you so much for your insight and this information! I was SURE I did something wrong, I had some sort of regrets. Okay, calming down, it's the thyroid - it needs help. Okay. I'm starting - finally - the exciting journey of studying the hormones. Yupee. I really have to find the reason for this. But as my luteal phase is coming, I'm gonna continue the progesterone cream treatment - it really helped me and I didn't want to discontinue this.
