I wouldn't bet on lactic acidosis, because of this sentence in the wikipedia page I linked above: "the risk of lactic acidosis with metformin is no higher than with other antidiabetic therapies when it is prescribed according to its label". This suggests the herbal therapy was considered too.
I use 1:1 FG:GR, and I'm lowering doses to below 3,000 mg. FG lowers blood sugar and blood pressure. So I prefer GR if I haven't eaten for half a day.
