Ascorbic acid is a good water soluble antioxidant that removes mercury and certain other toxic chemicals. It also activates the molecules to keep capillary walls intact & permeable to prevent scurvy or other blood vessel/flow problems. It does not contain those other molecules, doesn't even prevent scurvy by itself, but oranges and other natural sources of vitamin C do contain those molecules. In general it's best to use foods rather than vitamin pills to get your vitamins for similar reasons, but ascorbic acid "vitamin C" is a flagrant example we've known about for 40 years and yet most pills still don't contain the other essential compounds.

Rose hips were popular in WWII. Acerola cherry is an even better source of vitamin C than rose hips, among other recent sources. You have to take multiple big pills of rose hips to get enough so a lot of "rose hips" add ascorbic acid. Since there's another thread on B vitamins I'd suggest whole grain foods, nuts/beans and FOS instead of pills. Look up FOS for sources; the bacteria it feeds make B vitamins among other benefits.
