What's the best why to add protein but not calories?

I would like to add more protein to my diet but all the protein shacks are high in calories, I can't add more calories. I'm trying my best to loss this last bit of weight that I have been trying to loss this past year. I know I can just eat more protein rich foods but being a mommy of seven kids I don't have time to fix there meals and than something different for me. Anyone know of a protein shack that is not high in calories (that also taste good)? I would love it if someone would just come out with protein pills, LOL.

This site is UK only so I think you'd pay a lot for shipping but see if you can get the same stuff in the US - it's basically powdered milk without the milk taste, you can make a shake or just mix it in any wet foods, it's genuinely tasteless.

I've been drinking Special K's Protein water. I'm not sure if you are in the US or UK, but it's got 5 grams of protein and only 30 calories per serving. It doesn't taste bad either.

My brother used to be a body builder, he always tanked up on tuna and raw eggs. No, I couldn't do the raw eggs either. But tuna on the side with a salad everyday I could do. Canned Tuna, packed in salt water, low on the salt could be an option if your a fish person.

Thank you momtoo6, My only thing about the Special K's Protein water is that isn't ONLY 5 grams of protein. I'm trying to add about 40 grams. I would have to drink 8 of these a day if this was the only thing I did to add protein, it's great for when I'm going to be drinking some thing anyway but I can't relay on the Special K only.

Hi,
I've been makine my own jello with a sugar free drink (or maybe fresh lemon juice and stevia)plus unlfavored gelatin. Gelatin has surprisingly a fairly high amount of protein, plus it is a sugar free treat, and I believe gelatin is good for boobie growth.

Hi,
my box of knox (Dr. suess!!!) Says a quarter package has 2g of protein. But to make jello, I use 4 packages...so that means 32g of protein for a small batch of jello. Thats pretty good! I don't know how much the pills have...does it say on the bottle?

one of the best things for protein is egg whites, egg whites have only 15 calories per large egg and 6g of protein, its the egg yolk that has all the calories and fat and it doesnt have protein, oh and it doesn't have to be raw, a lot of body builders make a big omelette or scrambled egg or something with around 6 egg whites, some of them would add one or two of the yolks to it as well for more flavour, eggs are so cheap too, also like someone said before eat lots of tuna, some cereals have a lot more protein than others like special k for example

778mg. or 12 grains of pure natural source gelatin

My package says that 1/4 pack equals 1.8g which have 2g of protein. maybe you can convert the mg to grams and make a comparison?

That's 0.778g so roughly half maybe equivalent to 3.5g protein assuming they haven't done anything to it. You're right about the egg whites - all the protein and no fat, the white is going to become the chicken and the yolk is it's food source. Scrambled egg with white only isn't very nice though - better hardboiled and put in salad or sandwich.

I use Naturade Veg protein booster. It provides 48g of protein for about 218 calories. I just cut out 200 or so calories from the rest of my diet so as not to gain weight. I use the plain kind but it does come in other flavours. Their website is www.naturade.com. Mine comes from the local Wal-mart so it's not hard to find.

One of my friends had fibroids in her uterus but it all of sudden grew more than double in size just within months and then her doctor had it removed for her. My friend suspected that she had taken too much protein - 2 egg whites each day. I also have fibroids in my uterus and I am worried that by taking more protein might make it grow. Do you think this is possible?

Difficult to say but I think combining protein with estrogenic hormones may be a bad idea, as estrogen encourages growth of the breast and uterine tissue (healthy cells or otherwise) and protein gives the building blocks to do it so if your friend's hormone levels were quite high I guess that couldv'e caused it. Are you under regular medical follow-up to check if it's progressing? I'd say you may be safer with some of the suction devices as they work (or don't for everyone) only on the breast.

Fenugreek, fennel, red clover, soy, hops, PM, ? ginseng, ? barley, ? oats.....nearly all of the NBE herbs are estrogenic which means that technically if you had low body estrogen and a hormone regulated tumour you would encourage tumour growth. Similarly if you have higher natural hormones the NBE herbs are protective as they are weaker than natural hormones but block the hormone receptors so you'll discourage tumour growth. To put it in perspective though what you get in your 6 wonderup tablets is tiny compared to 1 birth control pill and even that is tiny compared to the hormone levels in your body so it shouldn't make any difference. We use protein for growth and repair so technically you could probably stop tumour cells reproducing by totally avoiding any protein but then you wouldn't be able to regenerate the healthy cells you need for your blood, organs, skin etc. It's all so different for each individual and you'll probably never know exactly where you stand medically without loads of blood tests and a full body MRI but generally I think the herbs are more likely to be weaker than stronger so it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm on Weight Watchers and I was also looking for a protein shake that was low on calories and high on protein. Nature's Plus has different ones that are mostly under 200 calories.

I think the best way would be too look through different protein powders and compare protein content to calory value. I'v noticed that they vary quite a lot, from some that have only like 5% protein content to the highest I found was one third. But the highest the protein content the more yucky they tend to taste.

I think the one I use should be at the top of this thread and it's about 97% protein (obviously if you make the shake out of it and use full fat milk there will be more calories but I just put it in food). Also you have to consider the type of protein you're getting because the body uses some better than others - I think egg source is best then milk or whey, soy comes a lot further down because it's a veg source, there's another post here somewhere where Waxingmoon gives better info about this.

Just a general FYI about protein.

We must have protein to live. Many tissues, hormones and enzymes in our body are protein based.

If your protein level drops too low, your body begins to fail. If you don't get all the essential amino acids you need your body begins to fail. Essential amino acids are found in complete proteins (animal products) and by combining incomplete proteins (beans and rice, etc).

The World Health Organization has estimated that people need to have a diet of 10% protein in order to be healthy. This would mean a person eating 1500 calories per day would have to have 38 grams of protein per day to equal that 10%. But this is the bare minimum. The US RDA for protein is more like 15% - which in the above example would be 56 grams of protein minimum. For athletes and those who are recovering from illness, the recommended amount of protein is 30% - or 112 grams of protein.

That's just for a 1500 calorie diet.

For 1800 calories your protein needs are (10%) 45 grams, (15%) 68 grams and (30%) 135 grams.

For 2000 calories it is (10%) 50 grams, (15%) 75 grams and (30%) 150 grams.


For NBE we should be somewhere between the 15% and 30% amount of protein to achieve the best growth.

A whole egg has 6 grams of protein.
Egg white = 3 grams
3-4 oz of fish, chicken or beef = about 20 grams
8 oz of milk = 10 grams
1 cup of beans with 1 cup of rice = 25 grams
1 scoop of whey protein = 16 grams

So, in the above post where someone's friend had 2 egg white a day - she was increasing her protein by 6 grams - not in anyway 'too much' protein.

The easiest way I have found to get enough protein is eating tuna for lunch. I buy the tuna chunks in brine (tinned) and 200g of tuna equals about 44g protein and is about 190 calories. I also eat two eggs for breakfast and eat chicken or beef for dinner each night. I know tuna isn't to everyone's taste, but I like it with a bit of low fat mayo - yum and my protein needs and my lunch are taken care of - not keen on protein shakes at all. Just my two cents worth !!!!

Unless that is one HUGE chicken (lol), then the egg white is only 3 grams. An average whole egg is a total of 6 grams. While it is true the egg white is pure protein, the egg yolk has an equal amount of protein along with fat and cholesterol.

I just found CytoSport Protein Pure Performance Drink , it has only 160 calories and 40 grams of protein per 20oz drink. Also has 0 crabs & 0 sugar! It's pricey, so far I found it at GNC at $42.99 for 12 bottles, that's about $3.60 each and you only need 1 per day. I'm going to keep looking for a better price.

there are so many different protein powders, one is bound to find something that suits both one's taste and nutritional preference. whey, soy, spirulina, you name it. i mix my (brown rice) protein powder in my (soy) milk. mixes pretty well; tastes pretty good too. may sound like an overkill but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do for bigger boobs.

As far as how much protein we need, this is what I found online (I can't say for just NBE).......

Q: How much protein do I really need to eat every day?

A: If you're mildly active (you exercise three times a week for 30-60 minutes), you probably don't need more than the RDA -- 0.4 grams per pound of ideal body weight, says Melinda Manore, Ph.D. To calculate your daily protein needs in grams, multiply your weight by 0.4. (For a 145-pound woman, that's 58 grams, or 12-15 percent of total daily calories.)

If you're moderately active (you exercise four to six days a week for 30-60 minutes), you may need slightly more -- from 0.6-0.7 grams. (That's 87-101.5 grams, or about 20 percent of total daily calories, for a 145-pound woman.)

If you're highly active (you exercise daily for an hour or more) you may need even more protein than that -- from 0.9-1 gram. (For a 145-pound woman, that's 130.5-145 grams, or about 30 percent of total daily calories.)

This may be a bit off the topic. I understand that certain weight is necessary to achieve goals in NBE. I, a mother of 3 and approaching 40 years old, already have a round tummy, although my breast size is pathetic, 34AA. So I don't want to add the weight to the wrong place. It's disheartening to hear that weight loss comes from the breast first, which makes me wonder if weight gain will go to the breast last! I am afraid that the easiest answer to this question is "everybody is built differently, so there is no tell how your body will respond" or "there is no way to isolate weight gain or weight loss - it will just spread over your body the way your genetic programming dictates". But I want to see if anyone out there has any good ideas - not gaining weight at all, or at least not in the tummy, but increase the breast size. Thanks.

have you tried skin brushing? I am already losing inches off my thighs and waist but have not lost any weight at all, dont ever exercise or diet. so I think it must be from combination of skin brushing and taking herbs to lower stress levels. (stress is believed to cause weight gain in tummy and lower body).

Kieyah - I know this wasn't addressed to me but Waxingmoon gave very specific advice about protein and calorie needs for NBE without weight gain in a post I started about a week or so ago, I think she recommended 30% of your total calories from protein but you might want to check.

What herbs do you recommend for stress? - I've got a lot of stressful things happening but don't feel stressed.

What exactly is your method for dry brushing? Do you do it every day? How long for? Have you tried negative magnetic fields for fat busting?

kieyah, I haven't really heard of "skin brushing", I just googled it so know that I know of it I'll try it.
I can't really say about the needing more or lose protein, I don't understand it yet.

awesome, thanks louise! I will check it out.

on the skin brushing I just do about 3-5 strokes each toward the breast area, so for legs and butt would go upwards and for back I go downwards, tummy upwards, arms overhead goes downwards. Only takes a couple minutes. I use a natural bristled brush the kind in the natual health section ment for cleaning your back in the shower. make sure it is dry. 3-5 strokes upward from ankle to knee, move over a couple inches, 3 more strokes, and so on all the way around. when I don't have much time i only do inner thighs and butt. I try to do every evening before bed or before shower, you can do twice daily though, it is very relaxing. I lost circumfrence from my waist, thighs and also the lump of fat behind my hips that never goes away even when I weighed 20lbs less then I do now. I can't measure this part but I can see it is gone when I skin brush. when I forget to do it for a while the hip fat starts coming back. It is not ment for weight loss. maybe it is just tightening the skin, but I know my waist and thigh measurments have gone down without diet or exercise so something is up with this stuff.

If you don't feel stressed, then you probably don't need anything. I take 5-htp, st johns wort, and licorice root. I think 5-htp is the best out of these. though I don't think it is for long-term use.

I had a thought on the skin brushing as to why it may be working to reduce my thighs and hip fat, maybe it is releasing the fluid retention. if this is the case, it would make sence that it would come back when I quit for a while.

Really sorry to bring this up yet again! I'm now having personal training sessions and have a program to follow each evening, boobs fine so far, legs possibly firmer - great!

The trainer says I shouldn't be taking protein supplements in case I bulk up but I'm not taking loads and I want it for booby growth (too embarassed to tell her though!). Im 5'1 about 107 lbs and have roughly 50-65g total protein per day, is this enough for me to worry about building muscle mass?

Without protein supplements I can't get protein without calories.

I'm also thinking of adding some amino acids mainly L-tyrosine in whatever quantity people take with BO, L-Lysine like MomXseven and L-arginine....For body building they advise much higher does so will this be ok?

Hi Louise,
Do you have an estimate of your total calories per day? With that I can be more precise.

It would seem to me you are probably eating somewhere around 18 - 20% of your diet as protein. For better success in body sculpting (and I am not just talking about muscle) you should shoot for about 25 - 30% protein.

Your trainer is way off base about protein supplements causing you to bulk up. It is far more complicated than that. In order to bulk muscle you have to exercise in a certain way - eat vast amounts of food (not just protein) -and sleep 10 or more hours a day. After all - if all it took to bulk up was eating more protein then professional body builders would have an easy time of it - the vast amounts of money people spend on attempts at body building and the fact that many of them resort to using steroids to gain muscle size indicates it is not an easy process.

Protein is necessary for NBE because we are trying to create protein based hormones. You also use protein to create enzymes, blood cells, immune cells, tendons, muscles ....etc. Since you are going to be using more of your protein to create muscle cells (long lean muscle cells - not bulky ones), it would not be wise to limit protein when so many processes are depending on it.

The maximum amount of protein you should ever eat would be 135 grams per day (that of course with the other calories there to balance it to 30% of your diet). You can see by this you are no where near the maximum range.

As far as the amino acids by themselves - I don't really recommend it. The amino acids are co-dependant on each other. You would do better to consume protein foods and avoid the kinds of issues that can come up when you supplement one amino acid but not all the buddies it depends on.

Hope this has been some help. Let me know your total calories and I can be more precise on what protein gram you should be shooting for.

Thanks, yet again. I thought I'd need to eat more like 80-100g to be in danger.

I'm really not sure how much I should eat, I know the average is about 2000 calories but I'm only small. I was only trying to maintain weight and lost 15 lbs so I must have gone a bit under. That was having about 1000 per day. As I've lost more weight and been working out a bit I tend to cheat a bit more now so probably more like 1200-1500. Tried to calculate BMR using online calculators and tried again using maths formulas but got a very wide range from about 1100-1800. I work full time as an optician, probably similar to a desk job so not very active. I'm only doing toning exercises - mainly squats, various leg lifts and some swiss ball exercises. She has told me to do them 'to fatigue' which is about 20-30 of each as I'm unfit, and sweaty and knackered and sore in about 15 minutes! I have been doing it every day though.

Also does the type of protein make any difference - I'm not taking whey isolate, I have soy protein bars and about 15g milk protein powder and try to eat and egg most days. I think I'm doing well in terms of boobs but don't want to have legs like a footballer!

Here is what I get for you. Since most of your day is inactive, you would do better to keep your total calories about 1350 per day. You could certainly eat more on the days you exercise more - up to about 1500 calories.

At 1350 calories per day your ratios would be best like this:

Protein -101 grams (30%)

Carbohydrates - 168 grams (50%)

Fat -29 grams (20%)

Your best protein sources are from animals -eggs are the best followed by milk sources (milk, yogurt and whey) then comes fish, chicken and red meats.

Your poorest protein sources are from plants. First of all you must combine plant proteins to get all the amino acids your body needs - so always combine grains with nuts or seeds if you are using these for their protein value. Also, we don't digest plants as well as animal forms of protein. This especially includes soy.

Soy can cause a lot of problems in digestion -and it also has substances that interfere with protein absorption. Even though it is touted as a complete protein, it has so few of the essential amino acids that you have to consume twice as much soy to get what you would from an animal protein.

Also - avoid soy if you have any thyroid issues - soy definitely interferes with thyroid hormones and can cause serious issues in that way.

- I am glad you are exercising - you will like the way it makes you look - and since your day job has you so inactive it will doubtlessly enhance your overall health.
