Will using magnets erase everything on your computer?

I've often heard it said that using magnets can erase everything on your hard drive because of the magnetic effect on the computer? Maybe it's one of those old wives tales but I heard it said a lot.

Well if you put a large magnet right alongside your computer it probably would have that effect.

You can wipe a hard drive with a magnet but I think the magnetic field has to be pretty strong to do it. Like Molly said the magnet most probably needs to be right up against the hard drive in order to do it.

That's right, the magnet would have to be very close to the hard drive. I'm not sure if the coin sized magnets we use are strong enoguh, but I do know that Louise errased her harddrive by placing her laptop on her thighs, while she was wearing the magnetic tape.
