Yin & Yang? I think not.

Yin & Yang? I think not.

According to old Chinese medicine, it matters if we eat Yin or Yang food. I have noticed that many girls on the forum go by this and avoid eating certain things like melon, strawberries or ice cream because it is "Yin" food. I took a look at this thing and PHEW! It makes no sense whatsoever.

Here is an example:

YIN FOODS
Almonds. Apple. Asparagus. Bamboo. Banana. Barley. Bean curd. Bean sprouts. Beer. Broccoli. Cabbage. Celery. Clams. Corn. Corn flour. Crab. Cucumber. Duck. Eels. Fish. Grapes. Honey. Ice creams. Lemons. Mushrooms. Mussels. Oranges. Oysters. Peppermint tea. Pineapple. Salt. Shrimps. Spinach. Strawberries. Soya beans. White sugar. Tomatoes. Water.

YANG FOODS
Beef. Black pepper. Brown sugar. Butter. Cheese. Chicken liver and fat. Chillies. Chocolate. Coffee. Eggs. Smoked fish. Garlic. Green peppers. Goose. Ham. Kidney beans. Lamb. Leeks. Onions. Peanut butter. Roasted peanuts. Potato. Rabbit. Turkey. Walnuts. Whisky. Wine.

This particular list is taken from here:
http://www.feng-shui-institute.org/yinyang.htm

Yang foods are believed to increase the body's heat(raise the metabolism), while Yin foods are believed to decrease the body's heat(lower the metabolism).Yang food is being recommended for NBE but still I've found contradicting information that suggests that Yin foods produce expansion of body cells, tissues and organs while Yang foods produce contraction. Confusing indeed.

On top of that, many food items considered Yin have good effect on NBE because they are "estrogenic". Kelp (a Yin item) contains iodine which helps to raise low body temperature. And Yin is considered "Cooling" foods. Yeah. Brilliant logic there.

It gets even more confusing when each Yin/Yang food list contradicts the other. One item is sometimes found on the Yin list, sometimes found on the Yang list. So I say BOLLOCKS to the whole idea of Yin and Yang foods! I put it where it belongs - in the deep dark dungeon together with dowsing. They make a great couple.

I agree with you Fennel.
The complex system of Eastern science cannot be distilled down to whether we should eat strawberries or not. Those who profess it in that simple of terms are misunderstanding a very complex issue. It is sort of like cargo cults building models of airplanes. There is an association that is just not valid. OR those people who believe that holding a vitamin and doing a muscle test can tell you whether you need that nutritional element. (don't get me started about dowsing...)

I don't consider Eastern science invalid, but nor do I completely understand it. My thought patterns and education are Western and although I have studied many Eastern energetic and healing techniques my grasp of them is as an outsider looking in. To my logic, these remedies should not work - but in skilled hands they often do. That is the key - skilled hands and skilled understanding.

I guess people want their answers to be very simple. After all the most common post ever created on the main forum is a new person asking what they should use for NBE. They want there to be one solution that doesn't require thought or effort and they want it to happen in 2 weeks.

Besides - I've eaten enough Yang foods to be a DD if that was all it took... and I'm not about to give up my strawberries... lol

I also agree that this yin yang thing is confusing and doesn't make sense. Nutritionists tell us that we should foods from both categories (yin&yang)in order to be healthy. So if they eat more yin than yang or yang than yin they're throwing something out of balance. Now,what I have read is that yin&yang is all about balance, they can't excist without each other. Here is something that I found about yin and yang:" The balance of Yin & Yang has a big influence on the body. If we eat to much Yin food we become heavy, inward, slow, under active. If we eat to much Yang food then we feel airy, outward, high, hyperactive. Applying Yin & Yang theory to diet means choosing a balanced diet of both Yin & Yang foods which compliment each other".... Then it lists some of the foods.. WOW! this is really something. The site I found this info. on is www.yogawelt.com/yinyang.html Smile
