I researched the internet and found a few things. I haven't found anything that wasn't a drug that could reduce androgens.
- A high-protein low-carbohydrate diet in combination with the drug Metformin was effective in restoring regular menstruation and reducing the levels of male hormones.
- Also, spironolactone is a drug that could do the same.
I know, they're drugs, but that's all I could find.

no it starts with a L for sure i spelleed checked it so it is L-Lysine
http://www.add-hair.com/dht-blockers.htm this is where i got the info from. i copied and pasted it for you Steph so you can see it.
"DHT Blockers
It is now widely accepted that the main culprit in the hair loss of 95% of us is DHT. Therefore the principal aspect of the strategy to stop hair loss is to block dht.
Blocking dht can be accomplished by:
Keeping dht from attaching to the receptors in the hair follicles.
Reducing the production of DHT.
Inhibiting the production of the enzyme 5 alpha reductase which converts testosterone into DHT.
Reducing the substances that can produce the enzyme 5 alpha reductase like cholesterol.
In this section we designate as a "DHT blocker" any product that achieves any of the objectives above. The importance of the DHT blockers in this section is to keep DHT from damaging the hair follicles. This is imperative to stopping long term hair loss. Damaged hair follicles will begin producing less hair, thinner hair until they stop producing hair completely.
Again, in addition to the "DHT blocking" properties of these products, they also offer many other benefits. To explain how each product fits within the strategy, we have ranked each product. Here again is the legend for your reference.
Propecia
It is important to note that Propecia the most popular drug sold to stop hair loss is a DHT blocker. Propecia basically works by lowering the levels of DHT in the body by blocking the enzyme 5 alpha reductase. We must keep in mind that Propecia is a drug and it has some side effects. For men, the main side effect is a decrease in libido, dificulty achieving an erection and a decrease in the amount of semen released. Propecia is contraindicated for use in women. Pregnant women should not even handle a broken pill due to severe risks to the fetus.
The DHT blockers in this section are all natural remedies. They offer you a natural way to block DHT without the adverse side effects. Many of these products can be safely used by women to block DHT. Note for women: If you are pregnant or lactating always consult your phyisician before taking any type of supplement. For a review of the best DHT blockers for women, see the Best Products for Women DHT section.

Saw Palmetto - Herbal DHT Blocker
This is probably the best known natural dht blocker. Studies have shown that saw palmetto is an effective anti-androgen. It acts in a similar way that propecia does. Firstly it lowers levels of DHT in the body by blocking 5 alpha-reductase. Secondly Saw Palmetto block receptor sites on cell membranes required for cells to absorb DHT.
Studies have been performed on the use of Saw palmetto in the treatment of benign prostatic disease which similarly to Androgenetic alopecia also depends on the production of dihydrotestosterone. All of the studies that have been performed to date show that Saw palmetto is an effective antiandrogen and has shown conclusively to be effective in the treatment of benign prostratic disease.
One may assume from this that since Saw palmetto is an effective antiandrogen and is used in the treatment of prostatic disease then it may also be effective in the treatment of Androgenetic alopecia. Saw palmetto is a potent herbal dht blocker.
The vast majority of people taking Saw palmetto have no apparent adverse side effects. It is tolerated very well and this has been confirmed during clinical investigations using Saw palmetto to treat begign prostate hyperplasia. Minor side effects can include stomach irritation and feelings of indigestion. In part, these side effects can be avoided by not taking Saw palmetto on an empty stomach.

Pygeum basically reduces the levels of DHT in the blood and reduces the number of sites where the dht can attach. This includes reducing the number of hair follicles where dht would bind. When combined with Saw Palmetto it seems to have a truly synergetic effect on the prevention of hair loss.

The herbal combination helps to increase the urinary volume and maximize the rate of urine flow. German research suggests that active ingredients in the nettle root may reduce prostate swelling. Again, since androgenetic alopecia is caused by the same factors (DHT) as prostatic hyperplasia. Therefore this combination of ingredients is also extremelly effective in warding off hair loss.
Pumpkin Seed Oil- DHT Natural Remedy

Soy Isoflavones- Natural DHT Remedies
In the case of hair loss, Soy Isoflavones are useful because they seem to regulate bad cholesterol. The reduction of overall cholesterol is important because cholesterol can produce the enzyme 5 alpha reductase which then turns testosterone into dht. Therefore, isoflavones have dht blocking properties.
Soy has been shown to provide many health benefits including bone maintenance, hormonal regulation in women (especially during menopause) and nutritional support for cardiovascular health and prostate health.
This is a particularly good dht blocker for women since it offers other advantages like reducing the risk of breast and uterine cancer. They also offer protection from osteoporosis. Finally, there is also evidence that soy may provide an easier transition into post-menopausal years for women.
Beta Sitosterols-Natural DHT Remedies
Contains a mixture of phytersterols. Phytersterols (sterols) have anti-androgenic properties. This is the substance that is able to block DHT. Beta Sitosterols acutally contains more sterols than saw palmeto. In addition, Beta Sitosterols also lower cholesterol levels which also inhibit the production of DHT. Therefore it is a very powerful DHT blocker and since it is a completely natural product, it does not have any adverse side effects.
In severals studies, Beta Sitosterols have been proven as effective as many drugs in treating prostate problems. Since these prostate problems are also caused by DHT, it is easy to see that Beta Sitosterols can be a powerful weapon in warding off hair loss.
L-Lysine
While L-Lysine is NOT a DHT blocker. It may make dht blockers more effective. Researchers have found that adding a supplementation of L-Lysine can make drugs like propecia more effective. Since propecia is a DHT inhibitor, as all the natural products mentioned in this page. The addition of a L-Lysine supplement can make these products also more effective. Studies has shown that L-Lysine combined with a DHT inhibitor can promote hair growth in people suffering from androgenetic alopecia."

Re: A question about Testosterone and Saw palmetto
February 24 2006, 6:24 PM
I don't know if this helps or not but I take L-lysine every day because I get HUGE cold sores on my mouth, eyes and nose. Yes, I agree, very gross. If I don't take about 2-3 grams of it a day then I get one. I have had them since I was a toddler. I had stopped getting them once I became an adult but since starting BE I have gotten them just like when I was akid.
For a little while I wasn't taking it as I should, frankly because I was getting tired of taking so many pills, anyway I didn't feel like I had grown and was really getting down. I only got one fever blister but it was small so it was no big deal. But I decided to start taking my L-lysine again last week and my boobs plumped up alittle bit more. At this time in my cycle I should be flatter than this. So the point to all of this is I really think the L-lysine is helping me. As a matter of fact, the bras I got at VS are getting a tiny, (very tiny but still) bit snug. My daughter wore it and she is a medium C and usually if she wears one of my bras then it is so stretched out I can't ever wear it again unless I put my old chicken breasts (silicone inserts) in them. I am wearing it today and it is not loose and my daughter said she thinks I have gotten bigger.
So, try the L-lysine, it seems to work for me. (Of course, I never would have put 2 and 2 together without reading this ) I know not everyone is the same but maybe it might work.

I believe that the action of Saw Palmetto is not just on DHT. The amount of testosterone reaching cells is less too. I believe that Soy is also generally regarded as a supplement that will lower testosterone levels, although I've heard some people dispute that.

awesome thread.
anyway has anyone here tried to use pumpkinseed oil instead of sawpalmetto or nettleroot alone against androgens? It seems really expensive in pharmacy but if it's worth it i just might add it.
and as Wahaika mentioned in another thread Spearmint tea works against androgens as well.
i would love sawplametto if only it wouldnt make me so hungry
another thing. we are using herbs against the androgens but what is the reason why the body produces them too much, is there smth we can do about that in the very beginning?

Does anyone know if taking saw palmetto will lower testosterone and increase estrogen levels in men? Will it effect men currently taking estrogen to help breast size? Thanks Denad

awesome thread.
anyway has anyone here tried to use pumpkinseed oil instead of sawpalmetto or nettleroot alone against androgens? It seems really expensive in pharmacy but if it's worth it i just might add it.
and as Wahaika mentioned in another thread Spearmint tea works against androgens as well.
i would love sawplametto if only it wouldnt make me so hungry
another thing. we are using herbs against the androgens but what is the reason why the body produces them too much, is there smth we can do about that in the very beginning?
