Most of us have heard of the warning about grapefruit and drug interactions such as cholesterol lowering meds, ect, but a goof on my part just brought it to my attention that it goes much deeper than that. About 2 months ago I began drinking a large glass of grapefruit juice each morning to help kick start my metabolism which was beginning to lag. It works great for that, so I was pleased with the results But, in the last two months I have slowly began having little signs that my hormones are trying to get a little out of hand. This month was worse than last.
I pulled out my old faithful copy of what your doctor may not tell you about premenopause and last night stumbled on something that shocked me. It said to not drink grapefruit juice because it will cause a build up of estrogen and other hormones in the body, if you are taking anything that contains hormones. It seems that it contains an enzyme that stops the liver from being able to expell the estrogen, progesterone, cortisol, testosterone and many other hormones so that they begin to build in the system.
I have been doing research this morning and found many sites discussing grapefuit juice and hormone imbalances also, but thought I would just warn everyone that those doing nbe should stay away from it. It's hard enough keeping outselves balanced while doing this, sure don't need to sabatoge ourselves with a simple glass of juice!
