The little green valve thingies need to be able to move freely. The force of the air being pulled out of the dome opens the valve. The green things should move out, away from the cup.
When you stop pumping, the dome will try to suck in air to fill the vacuum created, and this will pull them inward, and close the valve.
Basically, make certain the valve is free to move. If the green balls are getting stuck on the hose, you can always cut them off. Thats what I did to make the foodsaver pump fit(I neutered the valves
). Now I just use my fingernails to grab the valve stubs and release the vacuum.
