I agree with Doll. It is not necessary to get any feeling, a lot of people don't. It is only mentioned that you may get some feeling (tingling, aches, itching, etc) so you don't get scared and think there's something wrong, and that is it perfectly okay if you get any feelings.
I used to use a tape measure, but it used to upset me because it was never the same measurement (it would go up & down all the time). I probably wasn't holding the tape in exactly the same position, and thus giving me a different reading each time, so I don't think this is a good way.
Also, as Doll said, take photos before your NBE as some people have mentioned they didn't look to have grown until they took more photos a few months into NBE and compared and noticed the difference.
