A lot of ladies here work their programs around their period, changing their herbs at each different phase of the cycle. For me, though, it's easiest just to stop everything for the first 5 days of my monthly, then start it up like usual afterwards. It's the only way I'm able to get my monthly while on my herbs (it wasn't like that in the beginning, somehow), and it serves as my own monthly mini-cleanse.
