That's good to know!!
It makes me feel better about taking it - knowing it could possibly have some hormonal effect on me

I wanted to post this article originally but closed the window and forgot about it!

http://www.lepidium.com/

"The species, L. meyenii, was first described by Gerhard Walpers in 1843, and it has been suggested by botanists that the cultivated species of today may be a newer species found in Peru, L. peruvianum, (both are used interchangeably), and because of Maca's popularity as an aphrodisiac and energy enhancer, cultivation has boomed to meet the demand in the United States and abroad."

So I guess they are different strains that do the same things and it seems like the blend of different colored maca roots is what produces the best results hormonally - but I wonder what that certain blend is..
So I guess if a certain brand works for you then definitely keep using it and if it's not working - like for Ella - maybe the blend isn't the best for results or the maca itself wasn't harvested the right way.

Yeh it would seem the one I'm using might have balanced my cycle but there's no libido boost like I've had with other brands . My new one arrived today the 'P' species so see how that one goes. The current one they wouldn't elaborate on which species, either way I tolerate it well but it's running low so try the new one tomorrow Smile

Thank you Smile <3

Honestly when I first started I just picked up a regular maca root from a vitamin store. (GNC, Vitamin world or Nature's way) It was 100% and organic-- nothing fancy from a website. 3 months later I noticed a huge difference and 5 months later I knew there was a difference for sure Smile now I like to dabble with different maca brands, as long as they are 100% and organic, I am good.

any maca I have taken was the yellow, Lepidium meyenii. I think the first one I ever used was nature's way. I would like to find more brands just to see if there is a difference-- in all of the different brands I have taken, I haven't notice any differences. My body feels the same-- and never a libido boost :/ I don't necessarily want one but I would like to see if it would work. Lol. I was thinking of buying from the maca team, but I never used raw. I won't go to raw maca because I've researched it can cause acne. Maca has always kept my skin beautiful, but it was never raw.

Il look at your links (not that i need too ha ha).
Its good to know it took 3 months, to be fair i think i read that anyway. Im only on week 4 at most. And interesting you never got a libido boost, i figured that might be a sure fire sign its the right type but clearly not.
I might take a break when my cycle starts though to be safe.

Our Gelatinized Maca products are heated to high temperatures in order to remove all starch content within the root. It takes 4 kg of Gelatinzied Maca all-gelatinized-maca-products.jpgPowder to make 1 kg of Gelatinized Maca (a 4:1 ratio). This makes Gelatinized Maca more concentrated. At the same time, however, the high heat destroys all the enzymes and alters some of the important nutrients including glucosinolates. We recommend Gelatinized Maca for anyone with a sensitive stomach as the absence of starch makes it easy to digest.

Thats interesting eh from The Maca Team.

I suspected it would remove SOME but not ALL enzymes.. I wonder how important a role the enzymes play in it. Clearly besides the point when even the gelatinised versions have a good rep and help people but makes you wonder what MORE could be acheived by consuming the raw.

How the heck did the indigenous people consume it anyway? I read for the most part it was cooked up in some way aka gelatinised?

I read that too Ella from themacateam and also read that the indigenous people always cooked it before eating. I don't think it's really meant to be eaten raw.
I always read this from various people when I come across posts on the differences between raw and gelatinized:
"Raw maca flour (harina de maca) is an inexpensive Peruvian cooking flour, not a designer supplement. Maca is a fiber-rich vegetable, being nearly 25% fiber (oligosaccahrides, cellulose, lignins) by weight. Maca is always cooked in Peru because of these fibers, and because it contains goitrogens (glucosinolate), which can cause stomach cramps, indigestion, and potential thyroid / hormonal issues. The goitrogens also have some anti-nutritive effects. All of this is neutralized by cooking - and for this reason in Peru maca has always been cooked. To reap the full benefits of maca, it should be part of the diet, and it should be cooked. Gelatinized maca does this beautifully, rendering a slightly concentrated, easily digestible supplement best suited for incorporation into the diet in therapeutically significant amounts."

Thanks for the links Tongue

I was reading more on the navitas brand and it says it's a "blend of all the maca colors, black, cream and red. Each of the colors offers different adaptogenic properties. Our Maca is a blend of all colors, and therefore offers a broader adaptogenic quality."
I haven't noticed a difference in libido yet but I think before when I took the capsules (1500mg/day) I did have a higher libido but I can't remember exactly and I was taking other things too..
I think after this bag, I might experiment with other brands also.

I just got off work and I am exhausted, so maybe I didn't read it clearly but which one is Gelatinized Maca, again? is that opposite from the raw?

edit:
okay wait, I did a little research despite my headache lol

https://www.themacateam.com/gelatinized-...-different

http://news.therawfoodworld.com/maca-roo...latinized/ <- good for ella to read.

but, which is the one that is in capsule form, I guess is what I am asking. I know I don't take raw maca.. so are the ones in capsules gelatinized?

There is gelatinized which is pre-cooked and then raw which hasn't had the starches cooked out so that's why it's harsher on the stomach.

I think it depends on which brand you buy. I have seen gelatinized capsules and raw capsules too! But this is confusing.. Now brand has a raw one but it says it's gelatinized also... so..it's not raw then (?!).. lol
http://www.nowfoods.com/Maca-750-mg-Raw-...psules.htm

I took the maca one that DOESN'T say raw on it and never had stomach issues and I have a sensitive stomach so I am pretty sure that the other now one is gelatinized.
