I am underbust 34, over 40, which puts me at 38B by underbust method, but for over bust method I am 40AA, which fits me more accurately. My breast are muscular beneath due to my daily exercise, but they are not large. I like them since they fit me well though. If you are happy with the fit of your bras, then that is the most important thing.
Calculated measurements are only a starting place and then each individual has to fine-tune via trial and error. But the overbust method really makes no sense since the overbust has no relationship to the band. Taking the difference between the underbust and the bust to determine the cup size before sister sizing up or down for comfort tends to generate more accurate results.
I have heard the men and transwomen may experience some issues with this method, though.
My underbust is 39.5", over bust is 43.75. Bust/nipple is 48.5
I wear, normally, a 38 C or D on some styles/brands or 40 B, or C. I tried a 42 one time, but it rode up too much in the back, and I had to keep swooping and scooping to keep it all together.
I think, if we were bio women, it would probably be closer. But, as we all know, bio men have an inverted triangle chest unless a woman has been a body builder, or gymnast most of her life.

As I said.. You just illustrated my point, thanks. BTW, I would not ever call the bottom picture beautiful, but scary. LOL A nice toned female body, with a few shapely muscles is tops, in my book. But she is just monstrous, to me anyways.

I agree that the bottom one is too muscular, but I appreciate her hard work as long as she is not on steroid. Soft skin is part of femininity. But I am partial to the top one, 'cause I know her.
how does measuring above breasts give a band size?

There is not really one method that fits all. The under breast method fits some and above fits some, so you should see which one fits you best. POM
