Saw Palmetto and Nettle

question about SP and Nettle
March 30 2008 at 5:03 AM lilone (Login Joeykk)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Given that I know that I have a hormone imbalance, and while I was on BCP (which I'll be back on it in two weeks)I was in a better mood, my skin was better etc... what is ok for me to take?

I know I should take either Nettle or SP, but the fact that SP can cause weight gain makes me tense. Is it better to take Nettle instead? Is nettle less potent than SP? And if so should I take more Nettle then?

How do you figure out how much of each herb you should take per day? I read some people just jump right in, but others go slow. Is it best to just take one pill of each herb for a few weeks and then up the dosage as you go?

I am probably the most annoying poster here with all my questions.

Sorry for all the posts. I'm getting all freaked out now.:-/

There are risks with SP, as you know many women had waright gain cellulite however some including myself have not reported this affect. I have never taken nettle root (make sure it is the root) but from what I recall it is less potent. Sp you need 500-1000, 1500mg MAX. I do not know the doses for nettle root.

With doses overall, most of us diagree. Some believe it doesn't matter at all and you can just start taking the amount you wish to take. But others, including myself once again, feel it is best to ramp up with certain things so that way you can properly see how you feel. For instance, you will know what reactions you have to them and if perhaps you get pains right away maybe you don't need to ramp up and take more then. Know what I mean? As well, going slowly ensures you won't be stalled as the herbs will gradualy be building in your system.

Good luck Smile

I would get the BCPs sorted first, there aren't many people who've had proper problems that herbs have helped but BCP is a recognised medical treatment for hormonal problems. Hold off on the herbs at least until you think your symptoms are getting a bit better.

I too would say that BCP is almost a must for excess androges. I have them and I take both BCP and nettle root. But I also think that the whole SP freak has become slightly exaggerated. Yeah some people got weight gain and cellulite, but many haven't, and you can still stop as soon as you start noticing anything (increased apetite too for example). However there is a good alternative to SP which is nettle root, so you don't have to risk it with SP. I don't think nettle is less potent than SP, I even find on myself that it seems to be more potent, because it makes a greater difference to my acne than SP did. I take 1000 mg of nettle root and I took the same ammount of SP. As for doses I think that you can ''jump right in'' if you know your body really well, but if you don't, it's probably best to ramp up. I've been doing NBE for a long time so I can predict how much of sth I need based on past experiences, like how much od sth made me stall, and also what ''side effects'' I might expect.

I agree about everyon running away from the veil that is SP Tongue I took it and it helped me skin soo much and no weight gain people. I actually weighed myself a couple days ago and have found I have lost 7 pounds since I last checked and I don't even know how. As well, I take one SP in the morning and one right before I go to bed so if it does increase my appetite there really is no room for that anyway Smile

Thank you so much.

And yes, I am definitely getting my hormones in check before starting any herbs. There's no point in doing NBE is you're body isn't in balance for it. It'd just be a waste of money if I did just go ahead with it.

Stinging nettle WITH tcontraceptive pills?
March 26 2008 at 8:59 AM Angela (Login Angelacanfly)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi there~

Im thinking of possibly adding stinging nettle root to my program of WU in a month or so, however I've read about saw palmetto stopping the contraceptive pill (or morning after pill) from working effectively. I know stinging nettle root can be used as an alternative for SP but i couldn't find any info (even in the herbs information forum) whether nettle root can stop the contraceptive pill from working? I was assuming it probably would since it is similar to SP?

I've read back to page 130 in this main forum and so far haven't found anything about it!
Sorry if this has been answered before .. =x oh and also if anyone also knew what was the differences between SP and nettle root besides SP being stronger? or SP causing weight gain..was there anymore differences in terms of side effects?

Thank you very much x)!

Firstly make sure you get stinging nettle root not the leaf (the leaf is supposed to help allergies).

Some people have found stinging nettle similar in action to SP, most people have found it weaker and one or two have found it more effective. Spearmint is also supposed to be anti-androgenic so if you are thinking of making NBE teas then use a spearmint teabag for flavour.

I've never heard of nettle interfering with BCP (but didn't know that SP did either). Which BCP do you take? Do you definitely have high testosterone symptoms?

Hi Louise~ yep, i know its the stinging nettle root (if i do plan to get it, ill order it from vortexhealth).

Hmm ooh because i've read back all these pages (to 130) and noticed some people talking about how SP interferes with contraceptive pills. I see, so i guess like most herbs the effectiveness of it depends on the person. oh thank you, though i try to avoid teas these days and only take ginseng or green tea once in a ...while XD hehee.

Well truth is i haven't had any hormone tests to find out whether i have high testosterone for sure but i do notice my arms and legs are hairy, i also have acne and some facial hair (O _ O) but these things probably do not strongly indicate that i have high testosterone, however i noticed most successful and basic NBE herb programs have fenugreek and SP as the main herbs and something progesteronic like WY or RC. I just felt like maybe in a few months time i'll try SP or nettle root to see if it helps me, but this is only if WU doesn't seem to be doing anything.

I started WU for around 1 week with the recommended dose - 6tablets, but i feel like it was too much for me at the time (i only weigh 40-45kg, have a small frame and height; im asian). I also came down with a strong viral flu which gave me a sore throat/coughes, headaches and uneasy-sick like feelings in the stomach. So i stopped WU for 2 weeks (this is how long it took me to get better) and restarted on day 1 of my cycle which was not so long ago (22 March). I started taking doses of 2 tablets a day and then till 3 a day starting from today. I was also massaging with coconut butter since i first started the WU. Overall I actually think its working (boobs are quite sore since yesterday and have become slightly fuller). I dont think its luteal swelling, because that phase for me has already passed? I don't know for sure but i'm trying to keep myself positive about this =) because from my last periods my boobs shrunk (this was before ever starting WU) even less than my normal size so i was pretty down since i didnt have much boobs to begin with.

I followed from a topic before in one of the pages, i think it was Moon or Eve, suggesting the doses of fenugreek starting low on day 5 of the cycle, maxing it on day 14 and making it zero on day 22, then breaking again till day 5. I somewhat understand what her intentions were, it also provides a little break from the herbs, which i think i need every 1 month or 2months. Anyways instead of starting day 5, i started on day 1 of my cycle =] oh btw she also included taking SP daily and taking WY starting low on day 11, maxing it on day 20, halving it on day 23 and then back to zero on day 28.

My, this post is getting ridiculously long.. anyways the whole point is i wanted to know if nettle root would affect with any contraceptives? I dont take any regular ones or BCP, but i have a boyfriend and well sometimes i dont think the condom method is full proof (im a paranoid person) and if i felt like somehow i needed the morning after pill, i would take it. However i am strongly against taking the pill regularly because i know WU doesn't affect the effectiveness of the pill ; BUT im pretty sure if i do take the emergency pill, it will affect my WU progress.

Overall im quite paranoid so yeah =x i just wanted to know whether nettle root interferes with the contraceptive pill?
Im not even 100% sure if i'll add it to my WU; im waiting to give WU a few months to see if it works fine by itself ^^

Thank you and im sorry to anyone who reads this long post!! And hopefully you understand what i wrote about xD and bothered to read =(

RC's estrogenic, and very strong - be careful with it. WY is probably a waste of money as it doesn't convert to progesterone inside the body. I never risked SP in case of weight gain. Personally I would advise getting tested for high testosterone as if you do have it you're probably better getting prescription meds and if you don't have it you don't need to worry. Be careful with SP - some people got weight gain that they cannot shift, some people got cellulite that they cannot shift. I would stick with the WU, consider adding soy and some cereal herbs like hops, oat, barley, make sure you have EPO / borage oil + flax seed grounds or oil. Eat protein and drink lots of water. I don't think anyone has had any adverse rections with nettle root so you might want to give it a try but if you consider the best success cases I think only one of them has used SP/WY/RC.

Angela
(Login Angelacanfly) Re: Stinging nettle WITH tcontraceptive pills? March 27 2008, 1:34 AM

hmm wow i didnt know much about RC, but i was planning on getting wild yam later =x i'll reconsider it though.

Ah, i think my testerone problems aren't too high, but ive read people still take SP or nettle root even though theyre not too high in androgens? I was thinking of taking nettle root instead of SP, because of weight gain too - although im skinny i have big hips and abit of stomach so basically my bottom area isn't in proportion with my arms and boobs =s. I have heard about people loosing their cellulite after stopping SP, but... loose some boobs too. Also i think if i do take it, my stomach will keep getting bigger >_<..

Oh oops i forgot to mention, yep i take fish oil daily (will change to flax seed oil when i run out of these), eat oatmeals often & overal trying to eat more protein with shakes once in a while. I don't think i need to add soy capsules as i eat plenty of soy through my asian food =) i also sometimes buy soy milk to drink. I might consider buying hops, but WU has hops flower in it, but im not sure if they're related ?

Oh wow, the SP/WY/RC combo.. =O so SP was quite effective for that person? Thank you for your advice, ill just consider taking nettle root in a few months time, and 'maybe' WY ^_^ or maybe ill give SP a shot.. x(

I think I remeber that WU doesn't contain an incredibly high daily dose of fenugreek, 475 mg if I'm not mistaking. You have to of course take in consideration that it contains other herbs which also have phytoestrogens, but I thhink an additional capsule of FG per day wouldn't be bad. Many girls also added saw palmetto, which is recomanded if you are smaller than B, but this does interfere with BCP. Nettle can be used as substitute for SP.

SP is recomended to use if you are smaller than B. I remeber some girls did add it after WU on its own didn't seem to work its best, but I don't know how it went for them from then on.

Oooh okay maybe ill take SP later @__@

Re: Is it safe to take these herbs & be on the contraceptive pill?

i know that saw pamletto may interfere with birthcontrol pills, you should take nettle insted of saw palmetto

So im guessing nettle root doesn't interfere with contraceptives since its considered an alternative to SP? ^_^ alrighty.

I am not sure if SP causes breast growth on it's own, it may do if you have too many androgens but I would guess that it would take a long time because you actually want the phytoestrogens that are in Fenugreek, Fennel, Wild Yam etc. to cause boob growth.
I believe SP does cause some weight gain, I used it and did gain in weight, I always thought it was the Fenugreek, but since going off the SP and replacing it with Nettle I have lost quite a lot of weight, unintentionally, and I am still on the Fenugreek, so my guess would be that it can cause weight gain, some girls have reported this, and in my experience you lose the weight again as well, but I don't think there is a guarantee.
You can take Nettle root if you are worried about this, it is an androgenic herb just like Saw Palmetto, and does not potentially interfere with birth control pills.
I would in any case add a phytoestrogenic herb like Fenugreek or Fennel for boob growth as well.
I hope this clears things up a bit, good luck,
Lisa

Okay just more information, now im really sure nettle root doesn't interfere with contraceptives =]
