Soy products
May 5 2006 at 2:56 AM Darisha (Login Darisha)
Hi everyone
I am going to post this subject again about soy products not being all they are cracked up to be. If anyone is eating, drinking or using any type of soy in lotions etc please find the time to take a look at this site: http://www.mercola.com/2005/feb/26/soy_myths.htm
I noticed on a recent thread from Sass that she has added soy milk to her cereal. I'm not telling anyone what to do, I would just like you guys to make an informed decision. Soy products can actually be extremely dangerous. PLEEEEEEEEASE READ!!!!!

I tend to think that if you haven't got any better evidence for your views than the ravings of that crackpot Joe Mercola then maybe you shouldn't post anything at all. You are just scaremongering by posting nonsense from him. Joe Mercola is well known for his unconventional views and most of what he says is not taken seriously by other doctors because his methods are not scientific. Nothing that he says is proven and the available evidence suggests the opposite, that soy is a wonderful health food. Nothing that he says can help anyone to make an "informed decision" because he hasn't got any genuine or scientific information to offer. If you think he's some kind of authority that we should take seriously, maybe you can explain why you think that.

So what makes Mercola such a crackpot. I have never heard of him until I saw this website. I was going to add soy into my nbe program but decided to do some internet research first and have decided against it. Mercolas website was only 1 of many websites stating the negatives effects of soy. Perhaps you could have a look at this site too and tell us if these reports are written by a bunch of crackpots: http://www.nexusmagazine.com/articles/soydangers.html
I cannot tell anyone whether or not these claims are real but they certainly got my attention and I would rather be safe then sorry. I wasn't trying to scare anyone just bringing it to everyone's attention. I didn't realise there was so much controversy surrounding the benefits of soy and I'm glad I found these websites, regardless of whether or not they have been scientifically proven. Maybe you could enlighten me as to the motive behind these crackpots trying to warn against soy. I would be very interested to know.

Soy is a staple food in Taiwan and other Asian countries. It is most important food for breast enhancement. Many women report success in Taiwan with soy, I read girls stories on Taiwan websites about increasing breast size with soy. If soy is not healthy, why does Taiwan people not have health problems? In fact in Asian countries degenerative diseases are less, sometimes only half those in Western countries. Evidence suggests that Western diet is much more unhealthy.

It has been suggested by these sites I have looked at, that it isn't so much the soy itself than the way it is being manufactured. Should we just ignore these claims. Yes soy is very beneficial to health in many ways but it seems that the negatives are really outweighing the benefits. I'm not claiming to be any expert on the matter, in fact far from it, but I just don't think I can ignore the hype. Tiger Lily, if you get a chance please have a read of these websites and tell uis what you think.

Everyone has to say something wrong about everything!I mean soy is bad, phytoestrogens are bad, chicken is bad,red meat is bad, wine is bad,red meat is bad, carrots are bad, fruits are bad, vegetables are bad, nuts are bad, milk is bad, water is bad,air is bad...everything is cancerous or toxic or I don't know what! One doctor say so and another says the opposite! For God's shake!
My mother went to the best gyno in my country because of some small cysts on her breasts and he suggested eating soya for breast cancer prevention!I haven't heard of many Asians with breast cancer!(I mean in higher rates than Western women).Besides you don't trust eating soya and you prefer taking 3-9gr of phytoestrogens/day from pills and supplements?HA!that's F U N N Y !
Last but not least I am a student of medicine myself and even if I hear sb telling that soya is dangerous there is no way I am going to believe that it is more dangerous than cortizone or so many other drugs prescribed for common diseases!
As a doctor I don't suggest ignoring warnings but not becoming sterilised of everything as long as there is not clear proof of ones theory! In the links they say that soy is dangerous but in other links I can give you it says the opposite!Nature is more dangerous now because of all those toxins and nuclear trials but as long as you check out the quality of your food then it is ok!Has anyone decided not to breathe because the air is polluted or not to smoke?Do you think lung cancer is less severe?I don't think so!
I prefer a millions times to eat soya than taking saw palmetto or fenugreek capsules! And I say so as a DOCTOR too!And because I don't like to ignore warnings even if they are not yet reassured I will consume soy in moderation(every 2 days or so).
If I got ill(I pray not too!) I would never feel guilty for eating soya or carrots like never feel guilty if I got an accident because I have two legs and walk on the streets! With so many pills then I would be 100%sure I would feel guilty and suspicious.
I hope this helped...
PS.I didn't want to sound angry and I am not angry at all to the girls who posted the links! In fact I thank them for wanting to help and protect the rest of us!I am just angry for the confusal there is around us nowadays about everything and people don't know what to believe and what to do!

Nice post chocogirl. What you say is true, there is a story somewhere for everything we eat and drink saying it's bad for us. If we listened to all these stories, we could never eat or drink anything.
The nexusmagazine article quoted above is not really relevant to the discussion about soy anyway, because it highlights the fact that soy contains phytoestrogens, but all the herbs that people in this forum use contain phytoestrogens. Therefore, according to that article, all the herbs are bad for us, not just soy.

If anyone wants an antidote to the Mercola-Darisha way of thinking you can find it here:
http://www.soya.be/mercola.php
It does not say that Mercola is a crackpot, but it points out that his views are unconventional.
I agree with Alison regarding the other article quoted, the Nexus one, as that is more a slam against phytoestrogens than against soy. There is nothing there that really singles soy out as unique in any way.

You obviously didn't read the whole article but I don't really care. I know there are people that would at least want to know about this even if the claims aren't true. I'm sorry but I don't hold a great deal of faith in doctors as healers. They are drug prescibers for symptoms for other underlying problems. But that is just MY opinion. When I had severe morning sickness with my pregnancies a doctor prescribed antihistamines even though there was speculation on it's safeness during pregnancy. After telling him my concerns he told me that there was NO SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE to support these claims. Does this mean I was going to take the chance on my unborn child? I don't think so. But good luck to you; I'm not willing to ingore these claims at this stage.

Has the study been scientifically proven???????What makes one study more real and superior over another study? There are obviously studies that promote the benefits of soy and there are studies that negate the benefits of soy. Which one should we believe? I think it is just a matter of what each of us CHOOSE to believe.

I never said I trusted Dr Mercola. He is not the only one that is making these claims about soy. I am choosing to take caution with soy as there are positives AND negatives. If you all must know I used to drink soy milk a few years ago thinking it was good for me. I drank it for years. But then 18 months ago I was diagnosed with a severe anxiety disorder for no apparent reason which led me to take antidepressants (even though I wasn't depressed). There was something wrong with my stomach and was getting diarrhea all the time. I have only recently stopped taking antidepressants and am feeling much better. It has just made me wonder, after reading these articles, if the soy may have had something to do with it. One of the articles state that even though there is a lower incidence of breast and ovarian cancer among asian women but the incidence of stomach, pancreas, and liver cancer is a lot higher. I do believe that soy has real health benefits but I am maybe thinking now that it also has some serious concerns. I am only asking everyone to read the 2 websites I have listed. I am not telling everyone not to eat or drink soy. After all, people can make up their own mind whether they take the information on board or not. I have an open mind to things that aren't necessarily 'scientifically proven' which is why I am trying nbe. Or is nbe scientifically proven?? I am surprised these medical students are even giving it a go. After all there is no scientific proof that is works.
