Hi. I used maca and got results on using just that. But after a while, I stopped having the same effect and lost what I had gained. I'm not sure if my body just got too used to it or something. Maca is great bc it actually works, and fast. You will feel it (soreness) and see it (swelling), but for me it was temporary. I'm still using it but not as often, and I think you need to combine it with other supplements for effects to stay. I take the powder form in my morning chocolate drink every now and then. Before I was doing it about 4 times a week, 2 times a day.

Question about Maca and PO or BO
April 13 2008 at 1:48 PM Deb (Login ddover)
I am currently taking just the PO. I was taking Vitex, which I love, and decided to stop taking with the PO due to all the post on here. I've been on it for quite a while and haven't seen any HUGE results. After reading about the Maca (it's my understanding that it also helps, like Vitex, with PMS, etc.) I would really like to try that. If I do start the Maca, should I stop the PO? Or, can they be taken together? Thanks for all your help!!

I started taking Vitex for PMS. No I haven't gained weight from it. I have gained some growth in the boobs, but I've been taking BO and then PO as well, so I haven't a clue which one to thank for that.

The reason I loved the Vitex is because it dramatically lessoned my PMS symptoms. Cramps were gone, period only lasted about 3 days, the mood swings were gone, etc. I don't know how it's worked with others, but it really did help me with all that. My moods seemed to more leveled out. I would always have bad PMS for about a week before my period, but while on the Vitex, I didn't have any of that. It took about 3 months for this to happen though. Once I really got it into my system, I loved it!!

I have gone off of it and am just trying the PO alone. That is because of what I've read on here how they MAY not work together. I'm going to finish the bottle of PO that I have and not buy anymore. I really want to try the Maca but I don't know if I can use that with the Vitex and I hate giving it up entirely.

Any suggestions are appreciated ladies!!

Take care
Deb

From what i can understand, Maca works in a similar way as Vitex, although differences do exist. For example Maca is supposed to increase libido and sex drive while with Vitex I ve read that you may have a slight decrease in sex drive.. Anyway in my opinion you r not supposed to try Maca and Vitex together as they sort of do the same thing, balancing and adjusting hormones but in slightly different ways.. Personally I havent tried any of these and I am also in the same position as you are, thinking which one of the two I should start, together with some herbs for BE. I believe maca is safe to use with other herbs as there are already brands which use Maca and other herbs in their formulas (eg femax I think). As for Vitex taken together with other BE methods I am not yet quite sure, still searching.. I am not very knowledgeable about BO or PO either so wouldnt be able to say anything about these.. Hope this helps a little but I would also welcome further responses as I would also like to find out more about Maca and Vitex and their effect with other BE methods!

vitex - maca
April 15 2008, 12:20 PM

Hi,

I have taken during 6 months only vitex (I have grown one inch of boobs and also two cm of hips). It was dominant estrogen and I had fibrocystic.

In spite of this small increase, I continue having very little boobs.

Do you think that I must follow with vitex?

I must begin with something new?

I have been beginning with cream of natural progesterone (day 13 to the 27).

Think that maca it can help me?

If I begin with fenogreck I am going to have fibrocystic again?

See you...!

Can MACA make my ass bigger?
April 29 2009 at 8:53 AM Sandra (Login SandraDD)
I want a big booty!!

I know I'm weird. But Asian genes give us flat asses. Not cool. I've always envied Hispanic or African-American women's booty...I spend like 20% of my time in the gym to sculpt my already-flat-and-fab abs and the majority of the rest of the time building up my ass. It's a pain in the ass. literally. And yes sometimes I secretly listen to Baby Got Back (but never when there are hot guys around).

I remember reading it somewhere on the forum that MACA can make ur ass bigger....and I was like, "REALLY?!!!! I've found my jesus!!"

Did I remember wrong? I tried searching the forum but I couldn't find it (ok I was pretty lazy I only clicked on a handful of posts....)

MACA And your ARSE

Hey! I can help you on this one too! I actually read it on a black hair forum that it could make your ass bigger, and I joined the bigger booty challenge. I am an african-american women who is naturally thin and I have always wanted a body like Kim Kardashian. I think she has the perfect body, curves in all the right places (no-homo). But, I don't know if it's just not my physic, but I think you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it. Girl, I am drinking shakes to gain weight, taking MACA, doing the NBE, and I bought a corset to trim my waistline (funny I am thin, and like a ruler)Well, I have to say that the MACA has shown me some promise. I've been taking 1500mg daily for a month and I noticed more fullness in my hips and roundness of my bottom, I was a 32.5 before I began, now I am 33inches. And I measured a million times, just to make sure I got it right. Good luck to you girl! Go get you some MACA, I got mines on iherb it is the Paradise Herbs Full Spectrum kind, most potent. 1 tiny pill equals to 1730 of whole root.

Hey superstar!!

OMG I'm not alone!!!!!! Yes Kim has gorgeous measurements.

I saw your photos--I think you've got a cute butt!! And honestly, I'm envious of your genes, they're definitely on your side! I think Hispanic/African women have the best curves. My man told me that my ass actually looks really cute compared to fellow Asian chicks (ie. I actually have "some" ass)...but still I'd totally rock it if I gain a couple more inches around my bum. I measure 35 inches now but would love to be 36 inches or more.

Ok I will try MACA after I come back mid June (I'll be gone for a month and half). I'm worried about integrating new herbs into my diet when I'm on the road. Wow I can't wait to try it esp after hearing ur experience! Keep up the good work girlfriend!!

I posted the differences between vitex and maca on an earlier post. But in summary, Vitex seems to lower libido (androgens and testosterone), while Maca seems to increase libido. They both balance estrogen and progesterone, but Maca acts on the pituitary gland to release its own hormones. It is not considered a phytoestrogen, because it is like a sweet potato. It is a starchy fruit and the root is picked from underneath the ground. Vitex is an herb where Maca is not. But I would be careful not to try breast enhancment while pregnant anyways because you will lose the growth after breastfeeding.

I don't believe Maca would have any effect on birth control pills, since it does not produce fake estrogens in the body as phtoestrogens do. It just balances hormones. I am not even sure if phytoestrogens would interfere with BCP's since BCP's prevents the ovary from releasing the egg. If in doubt ask your doctor.

I suspect that maca wouldn't interfere with birth control, but as there's no real evidence on this it's impossible to be 100% certain.

Hi Laura,

My butt growth with Maca snuck up on me. You could say it stabbed me in the back(side) with no warning whatsoever. I was just minding my own business and WHAM... jumbo cushions.

I blame the internet. You can find a ton of information about Maca... from the people that want to sell you Maca. You will read tales of how the gentle Peruvians, or Equadorians, (or where-everian this stuff comes from), having used this radish for centuries to enhance any number of things... usually with some sort of increased libido... wink, wink... kind of promise. Never in any of these promotions was the sage warning of 'Do not use this product if you do not want to increase your rump'.

But the past is behind us and so is my Maca enhanced butt.

So, in answer to your question - no warning tingles.

As far as you hot flashes - maybe if you give it several months. As a precursor agent it would take more time to build you the hormones you need. I have not had the classic 'hot flash' very often but I have endured the misery of 'night sweats' many times. Progesterone cream helped some, but my true hero for night sweats was and is Fennel. I just take the dose recommended on the bottle and it bumps my estrogen into the no night sweat range... ahh sweet relief.

I hope you get what you are wanting from the Maca without getting anything you don't want...

Best wishes,
waxingmoon

I will return to the forum if my butt does get bigger and let everyone know.....lol
Haven't had the night sweats and I hope I don't get those too. I do get very hot at night and sharing the bed with my hubby has become a nightmare.lol
Well maybe this tingling is old age after all..lol

Best wishes,

my experience with maca
February 20 2009, 4:27 PM

Hello there,
Responding to Laura and her question on Maca. I tried Maca after reading the posts on making your butt bigger. I am definitely an apple shape and boy my butt is so flat it makes the walls jealous.. lol.

I took one capsule 500mg a day for about a week. I did get the tingles you described in my backside and did get just a little less than 1/2 inch growth. yeah! However the bummer is that I quit taking it due to the maca was making my heart race. I have a very sensitive system, and as much as I hate my rear end and have been mercilessly teased about it I will not jeopordize my health for it.

Good luck with your maca,

The difference between Vitex and Maca...
December 18 2006 at 3:15 AM Katrina (Login mountainkat)

Okay, I have heard a lot of you all have been using Vitex (agnus castus or chasteberry) to balance your hormones along with Progesterone cream. I have found that the main difference in Vitex is that is balances estrogen and progesterone, but decreases androgens (for sexual enhancement) and it decreases prolactin (responsible for increased milk supply in mothers).

Maca balances estrogen and progesterone but INCREASES androgens and libido in women.

*But be careful of progesterone cream! Read this woman's story below.

I tried the progesterone, for years, along with reducing xenoestrogens from my environment. The fibroids were not bothering me, but didnt disappear either. The migraines before my periods went away. The breast tenderness before my periods went away. Then THEY RETURNED. I thought I might have exposed myself to more xenoestrogens so I INCREASED MY PROGESTERONE! My symptoms got worse. I then had my hormones checked. My estradiol was low & my progesterone was high. These same symptoms were now caused by Progesterone Dominance! According to Dr. Mercola, progesterone can be stored in fat cells for up to 2 years! Is this really the best solution to balance my hormones?

In my research I have come across an herb/root/food grown organically, high in the Andean Mountains in Peru that is worth looking into. Its called Maca. It is suppose to adapt to the body’s needs and support menopausal health. It works with the body, the pituitary & hypothalamus, to bring about healthy balanced hormones. Maca is not a hormone, but a food that helps the body balance itself AND it helps both men and women.

This sounds like a gift from God!

**Too much progesterone is also a bad thing and will not completely leave your system for up to 2 YEARS!! So I beleive it is best to use eather vitex or maca depending on your androgen levels to balance your hormones and beware of progesterone cream!

Yes, too much progesterone is a bad thing. Too much of any hormone is a bad thing. What we don't know about the woman in your example was how much progesterone she was using. We do know she used more when her symptoms increased and predictably this worsened her condition.

Natural progesterone cream when taken at appropriate levels (20 - 40mg a day for most) has very little chance of creating progesterone dominance in someone that needed to supplement their progesterone in the first place.

When progesterone cream is initially used in those with low progesterone it turns on receptors and can initially increase estrogen dominance symptoms. This passes within 3 cycles and the body begins to stabilize. If a woman uses too much progesterone, it shuts down the receptors and causes the very symptoms it is used to treat.

It is all about balance. You can't just use a bunch of progesterone cream like its body lotion. You apply the correct amount and you tailor it to your symptoms. That is why I always recommend using one of Dr. Lee's books as a reference when someone wants to use progesterone.

Yes, progesterone is stored in body fat for up to two years. That is completely natural. If it is not stored in body fat we could never be in balance. The body stores progesterone in fat so it will always have a ready supply. Progesterone is used to make many different hormones in the body.

If a person overdoses on progesterone cream it only takes a few cycles of appropriate levels to bring the excess down. The amount in the body fat returns to normal quickly.

Yes, use caution in taking any hormone or any herb that increases hormone activity. I believe the same caution should be stated for both Vitex and Maca. They are not without risk. If used in excess they will also create hormonal overload.

Remember, take the LEAST amount you need to get the results you are seeking. This applies to any drug, any herb and any cream you use.

so how do we know if we should use vitex or maca? i do not know what my testosterone levels are like. I always assumed they were high because i have some pimples and small breasts

But i also have a very girly voice and a small chin, so maybe theyre not high. Im so confused, i was going to use maca, but it might not work if i have too much testosterone!

I used maca for over a month. I related my results earlier.

My opinion is that Maca has strong estrogenic qualities, at least in me, thus the fat increase. It did not in any way enhance my breasts. There has not been as much research on maca as some other herbs. If you try it, use the minimal dosage recommended. I may have used too much and overwhelmed my system - either that or it just has a weird effect on me.

Hi Double Ace,
Ah yes, the maca rumpa... lol. Well it DID make quite the impression on my posterior. I must admit I was using more than the package stated to use (a tablespoon versus their recommended teaspoon) - so maybe if I had used less it would have been different. But that is water over the bridge (or fat over the butt... lol).

I wish I could say the caboose was a solid slab of muscle - but even though I work out about 2- 3 hours a day there is still a lovely layer of fat. Happily there is not much cellulite - but hey, I am 45 and I do not require my body to be like it was when I was a 25 year old. (truth be told I am in much better shape physically and muscularly at this age).

So, if you are trying for a muscled up rump, then skip the maca and push the protein and butt workouts. But if you are just going for size then by all means maca it up.

all jokes aside, a toned butt with a bit of fat layer on top is very desirable, because if your butt is too muscular it will feel and look funny, and obviously if it's all fat then it won't ''sit'' right..

What was the brand u used by the way? I'm planning on purchasing mine from mountainroseherbs.com but am afraid i won't get good results if the brand really makes a difference

The brand of maca I used was Navitas and it was a gelatinized powder, which concentrates the maca much like an extract concentrates an herb. It was a fairly pleasant smokey tasting powder that I mixed in with my morning protein drink.

Yeah, it lulled me with its pleasant taste but then it bit me on the ass... I am still haunted by its legacy. My pants scream every time I shove my big bootie into them. If only they made pants the way they make bras so I could go up a couple of 'cup' sizes (or 'mug' sizes) in the rear. The horrors...the horrors...

Surprisingly, no one has commented on my largess. You would think I would be plagued with questions about my 'windfall' but apparently a bigger butt is not a sought after commodity for most. Ah well. My husband appreciates the increase and that is all that matters to me.

All's well that ends well,

Hi Silv,
Well that bag of maca is still sitting on my shelf. I had to look back at my program page and I think I used it for about a month. I started off with about 1/2 tbsp to begin with but then I was consumed with the 'more is better' brain fog and began to take about a tablespoon per day. I would estimate that at least half of the bag is left. (that bag and I may grow old together...lol)

Hi everyone,

I purchased the "Navitas Naturals" gelatinized Maca Powder (that waxingmoon used) from iherb.com (Shipping is currently a $1.99 flat rate for domestic orders, i.e. within the U.S.). But there isn't any info on the package about how to correctly measure to get the right serving size. So I searched this forum and found my answer on one of waxingmoon's posts, of course Smile

http://www.network54.com/Forum/371678/th...routine%29
"...The instructions said to take 1/2 to 1 teaspoon per day. This would have made for 120 servings according to the bag. I took 1/2 tablespoon to 1 tablespoon per day."

and from her program page: http://www.network54.com/Forum/482052/th...a+to+start
Program Page dated 5/2/08:
"According to my package, 1/2 to 1 tsp = 3.5 grams of powder ... My best guess is that they mean that 1 tsp has 3.5 grams of gelatanized powder. So 1/2 tsp would have 1.75 grams or 1750 mg. Now since this is a gelatanized powder it may be more like an extract - meaning more powerful than the herb would normally be ... Edit: I see now that you asked about a 1/2 tablespoon, which would be 1 and 1/2 teaspoons, so the dosage you are asking about would be 5250 mg. (that sounds like a lot to me...)"

Ironically, my package states that the daily serving size is 5g??!??

waxingmoon's Program Page dated 9/1/08:
"When I first began taking Maca I took much more than the package recommended. The package said to take 1/2 to 1 teaspoon and I was taking at least 1/2 TABLESPOON (1.5 teaspoons) up to a full TABLESPOON (3 teaspoons)...This meant I was taking in a minimum of 5250 - 10,000!!!! mg per day ... I DO NOT recommend anyone use this much - EVER ... I would say to limit your dosage to 1000 - 1500 mg per day"

Interestingly, I found a thread about women experimenting with Maca to grow both breasts and booty. Eve's forum is mentioned on p.10 Smile

http://forum.blackhairmedia.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=148128&PN=1

It's a loooooong thread; one particular lady (aussie101) had great success using the Natrol brand - 1500 mg (3pills)/day. Supposedly, 4500 mg is the daily amount recommended by Natrol. aussie101's before and after pics are on p.15

Also on p.15, another brand is mentioned - Royal Maca extract powder: "1/4 tsp = 625 mg and daily serving size is 1/4 tsp to 2 tsp" (5000mg).

I'm curious about Maca's effects and will let you know if it works.

Also, here's a link about the risks with Maca:
http://www.highonhealth.org/what-nobody-...e-effects/

Note comment #4 from Fran (the author of the article) who suggests taking it on Days 1-14 only.
waxingmoon, what do you think about cycling Maca? Like you, she also recommends slowly ramping up the doses and explains why and how to take period breaks.

Thanks in advance, waxingmoon, for your help! By the way, I've always enjoyed reading your posts, especially your personal program page. You have an awesome sense of humor and your positive attitude is infectious Big Grin

Hi SoCalgrl,

Way to research your topic of interest... well done.

Well, some of the maca is not a gelatinized form, so the 'use' amount would be much higher. Apparently gelatinizing is somewhat like an extract in the way it concentrates the substance.

The amount of maca I initially used was way over the top. I was being stupid and foolhardy but mostly I was just convinced that NBE meant using A LOT of whatever... This was way back before I had read enough to be less of an idiot. The effect of that much maca was very dramatic and unfortunately probably something that set me back in my attempts to control my estrogen dominance.

We sometimes get lulled into a belief that an herb touted as 'balancing' to hormones can do more that what is chemically possible. With maca there is not much information except for testimonial (like my account) or that which is promoted by companies that are selling the product. Scientific evidence about maca's effects is seriously lacking - much like any other NBE substance.

What I can say about maca's mode of action is that it seems to act like steroidal saponins which are a precursor to hormones in the body. Maca is used by both men and women, which makes it seem like a substance that would promote the creation of testosterone and estrogen. In other words, it would not directly supply those hormones, but would make it easier for our body to create them. This would support the fat increases and muscle building support that are mentioned in testimonials about maca's function.

You have heard accounts about my first round of maca... massive amounts for less than a month and the result of a big ole butt to show for it. My second round of maca was a much different story. Since I had not used the whole bag and since I just couldn't stand to waste it I tried again. This time I used maca during the last 14 days of my cycle (yes I know this flies in the face of what I just said about it being a precursor to estrogen... if I am anything, I am inconsistently inconsistent... lol). I used only what the package said to use 1 to 1.5 teaspoon (versus the tablespoon amount I had used before) per day. During this time I was using fennel during the first 14 days of my cycle as well and also using progesterone cream during the time I was using the maca. I seemed to have gained a little breast size from this regime and it did not increase my big ole butt further.

So, to summarize. Maca versus maca is not necessarily the same thing because of differences in potency - therefore accounts of use amounts will vary. Again I point to the whole extract versus herb issue as a guide. You use less of an extract (gelatinized maca) than you do an herb (non-gelatinized maca).

As far as timing the use - yes I did that, but opposite the way the other woman used it.

Hopefully this rather rambling account has been of some use to you. Thanks for your kind words about my 'humor'... it is fun for me, so I am glad you can share in my joy.

I think maca can be useful but I would say you can't take anyone's account too much to heart. There are many other factors present that make testimonials rather worthless as a scientific study. It should be safe at reasonable amounts but watch your body's reaction and respond accordingly.

Best wishes,
waxingmoon

waxingmoon - Thank you for your golden advice! I completely agree with you about the potency of pills vs. extracts, which is why I was initially confused about how much to take.

Bewbs - upon Fran's recommendation, I'm waiting for the start of my cycle to take Maca so I don't know what it tastes like yet. Will let you know when I do.

MermaidSlur - I can't attest to the gelatinized powder being better than the pills. Honestly, I'm just tired of swallowing pills and felt that mixing the powder into my morning yogurt or smoothie is a better fit. And as waxingmoon pointed out, the gelatinized form undergoes "an extrusion process to concentrate the active ingredients" so I don't have to take as much. Though, I did pore over all of the websites selling Maca and did a comparison check. Being a firm believer of "you get what you pay for," I was a little wary of some of the brands. I chose "Navitas Naturals" because it is 100% certified organic, kosher & vegan (by the Control Union and US Dept of Agriculture). You should double-check where each company's Maca root is coming from; it should be cultivated in Peru/Peruvian Andes. Granted the Navitas brand is more expensive than the other brands out there, but I can't risk putting just anything into my body. "Navitas" also produces maca as raw powder and capsules, if you're interested.

Dory505 - My understanding of the thread from the Black Hair Forum is these women are taking maca soley for boobies & booty growth. Yes, some women who are trying to gain weight are also posting on this thread, so it makes it confusing to separate the two. I re-read the thread and the women who are making gains are doing so in their bra and pants (butt) sizes only. Those who are trying to gain weight are taking Periactin pills to stimulate their appetite. Also, waxingmoon stated that she didn't gain any weight while on Maca. Lastly, I've read on various websites that Maca is an "adaptogen" that supposedly gives your body what it needs (e.g. http://www.macaroot.com/benefits/index.html) None of the sites mentioned weight gain as a side effect. However, I want to stress that herbal/"natural" supplements have different effects on different people.

Well, wish me luck and best wishes to everyone on their NBE journey!!

I checked the natrol website.Their maca is 500 mg per pill and it is a 4:1 extract so i when ( Aussie 101 ) was taking 1500 mg (3 pills) this means she was actuallt taking 6000mg of maca per day.
