To Molly;a question re: teenage acne
January 24 2006 at 2:28 PM Steph32 (no login)
Forgive me for being so off topic here guys!Molly,I addressed you as I recall you are studying herbology?? My beautiful 15yr old daughter is suffering from VERY severe, persistant AND resistant acne (I dont think its cystic type )She started getting black heads at age 8-9!!And NO,she didnt start pueburty young. From age 9-now, its just progressed. She has used Pro- active,EVERY otc product, oral and topical antibiotics from our Dr.,some methods didnt work at all, some made only bare minimum diff, some made a bit more diff but once her body seemed to "get used to it" it stopped working as well!Since discovering NBE & herbs,I'm leaning toward a possible hormonal imbalance w/ her??But the Dr hasnt mentioned that as a possibility. Her self esteem is SO low because of this and she ofton avoids social situations as a result and its BREAKING MY HEART to see her feel SO sad!!Although I asked Molly,I WELCOME anyone with insight/ helpful feedback,Thanx much!

I would very interested in knowing what to do also. My 12 year old has had blackheads and whiteheads (small ones) on her face and her arms since she was around 8 or 9 also. I really feel that she must have more hormones than my older daughter (14) She has liked boys earlier, had body odor earlier but did not get her period earlier so go figure. I would love to know what to do to help her. She is starting to feel really bad about it.

I feel with your daughter since I had really bad puberty spots from the age of 12 and got bullied quite badly for it at school.
With fourteen I persisted to get it checked by a doctor, they did a blood test and found that I had elevated testosterone levels and got a prescription of BCP, which I took for years. That did help moderately but my spots have never really went away, I am 23 now and am still trying to get rid of them, even though they have become less.
My advice would be to go to the doctor again and ask to have a hormone test done. If it turns out that she has an imbalance you can consult with a herbalist and see what the best herbs would be for her to take.
I never really felt good taking the BCP, one of them made my moods quite low, without it I am even worse and only since starting on the herbs I have noticed what really helps me. The SP is as effective against fighting spots as the BCP was if not more and helps balance my moods as well.
Once I am finished with my BE experience I will take vitex for a longer period of time to see if that can maybe help to rectify my hormonal imbalance.
In the meantime, using zinc cream has helped me clear up the worst spots and on the other areas I just use organic tea trea oil at morning and night when it is bad, which helps a lot. She could maybe try using that. On the label it always tells you to dilute it, which I never do since it seems to help best undiluted, but she would have to try that for herself.
I also used to put yoghurt on my face for a while, you just put it on at night and let it dry, then wash it off. That helped a bit too, but she would have to try that on a small area just to make sure it doesn't make it worse.
Your daughter could also have a food allergy, maybe she can get tested for that as well, I would really go to a herbalist and see what they can suggest, maybe she is allergic to dairy products, which are hard to avoid, especially when you don't know about the problem.
I hope this wasn't too long a response and that maybe some of it can help.
I really hope that you find something to help her soon, I know how bad a spotty face can make you feel and it can really gnaw at your self confidence.
Good luck,
Lisa

i had sever acne during high school. i tried proactive topical but that did nothing. i tired MURAD and it worked the best (i was surprised considering i usually find that drugstore BP worked ok). i quit using it cause it was so expensive and i buy products that are a close and cheaper alternative to the murad acne line.like i have BP, sulfur combo (with zinc oxide preferably). that worked so well.there is also dermabrasion which helped me alot. there is also colloid Silver which was amazing stuff. 1 used a hydrogen peroxid/baking soda cocktail mix as a mask and face scrub. stabalized Oxygen. there are other stuff like Tretinoin cream. glycolic acid peels, creams, astingents etc. i got info on all these at CureZONE forum . they have an acne section. just so you know these ideas i gave above are topical treatments. on curezone that have an acne protocol avaiable. i will find the link for you if you need it. it talks about suppliments and diet as well as topical solutions.
ive used all of these methods at some point and they all seemed to do something.
right now my acne is under control but i have really bad hyperpigmentation and scaring that im trying to fix up.

The problem for herbalists when trying to treat acne is what works for one person can actually make acne worse for someone else. In Chinese herbalism it is generally reckoned that acne is an outward sign of internal imbalance, so herbs for balancing hormones are prescribed to try and remedy the problem. But many herbalists in the West think that it might not be an excess of hormones causing the problem, so much as the skin and the sebaceous glands being very sensitive in their reaction to them, and so over-producing sebum which then clogs the skin and causes spots. Androgens are regarded as the culprit causing the reaction and these can be affected by herbs such as Saw Palmetto and EPO, which are therefore regarded as anti-androgens. However, some people report that EPO made their acne worse, so it shows how difficult a problem acne is to deal with. The same applies to Vitamin B6, as some people say large doses cleared their acne and others say it made it worse. In Europe some herbalists use Proplis for acne. I'm not sure how that's supposed to work, but it does seem to work for some people.
Acne is of great interest to herbalists, because it's much more common in Western countries than elsewhere, which means that perhaps there is a major dietary factor in making it more prevalent in the West. If so it can be treated by finding out what nutrients in our diet are being eaten to excess or are deficient in our diet, compared to the diets in other parts of the world. If our Western diets are not as well balanced as in other parts of the world then herbalism could help to address this imbalance. On the other hand for some people it appears that the solution is simply to eat more healthily and more naturally. Some say that by cleaning up their diet they cleared up their acne. Either way alternative health practitioners such as herbalists tend to regard the solution as something you have to look for in the body's hormones, either hormone imbalance or the production of sebum in response to hormones. Conventional medicine does not seem to address this and concentrates instead on antibiotics. Antibiotics may or may not control acne, hopefully they will control it at least partly if not fully, but they cannot cure it or stop your skin from becoming oily and clogging up. To cure acne you need to find a natural solution through diet or alternative health, because conventional medicine offers no answer.

January 24 2006, 6:49 PM
Steph, the Zinc cream I got from Germany, you can just buy it in pharmacies there and I am sure that you must be able to get them in the UK and US from the pharmacy as well.
My doctor has also prescribed me Zink Sulfid which you apply topically as well and is meant to be very safe, the chemist mixes it for you but it expires after 5 weeks so you are best getting it on repeat prescription. That helps but it takes up to six weeks to work so she would have to try it for a longer period of time to see an effect.
As she is so young a dietary change might really help solve the problem, so talking to a nutritionist might help.
While I was doing my liver cleanse my skin cleared up greatly, I was using a milk thistle and dandelion mix from the organic pharmacy. I contacted them to ask for how long I could use it and they said for a normal cleanse 2-4 weeks and to clean up the skin for 2 months. You could contact them and ask them if it would be ok for your daughter to do a cleanse at her age, the customer service is great, just let me know if you want me to give you the web address.
Good luck and let us know when you find something that helps, maybe I can learn something too.
Steph and SugarQ, regarding your scarring, my mom discovered this and I have been using it myself for 6 weeks now and it is helping, I have some small scars on my face as well.
She simply applies Weleda childrens Calendula cream and it has made her skin really nice and smooth and my scars are becoming less visible too. It is not the ultimate cure I think, but it made things better for both my mom and me and it is improving more day by day and it is worth a shot if you want to try it. You can get it in the UK and online and it costs about £5 I think for a big tube and it lasts for ages, even if you put it on your whole face. I always try to "beat" the cream in since that is meant to help absorption and I think that might also have been of benefit in softening up the scars.
If either of you finds or knows anything better it would be great if you could let me know, I wouldn't mind getting rid of those ugly marks on my face.

Lisa, i feel your pain, and im to see this topic come up.
steph,http://curezone.com/forums/f.asp?f=333 this is the curezone acne forum. http://curezone.com/dis/1.asp?C0=23 this this suppose to be their protocol. ive never dont it cause it freaks me out but other members found it helpful. there is a search menu so you can find specific stuff about acne and colloid silver, PB shakes, Oxygen, etc.
as for sulfur, i usually buy product like clearasil with 8% sulfur in it and 10% BP. there are other better quality products but they can run a tab of between 20-30 bucks. murad has a acne treatment serum (somthing like that) that has only sulfur and Zinc Oxide in it. i used the whole system and found it to completly clear up my skin it was fairly gental on my skin. but i had dry skin and the dry skin acne system did nothing for me. so i used the oily skin system which worked but i had to invest in a better exfoliant and moisturizer. i then bought cheaper products with the same meds. my favorite is DDF BP gel 10% which contains 3% sulfur. i use it at night. you just need to find a product with a sulfur base. there are soaps, creams and masks that have sulfur. the best time to use it is at night. and the perfect combo is with BP but as u know BP can be irritating. so you can find alternatives if you need to.
the colloid silver you have to do research on. there are many pretenders trying to sell this product but they are usually poor quality. so you may have to google to know what you should be looking for. for acne you use it topically but you can also drink it. 3-5% solution should be enough. you rub it on your face and it should help clear up. i wanted to mix the stabalized Oxygen in it to boost its power but i read that it will mess up the effectiveness or something. im not too sure so im trying to figure that one out. but you can mix colloid silver with baking soda and hydrogen peroxid and its suppose to "supercharge" them or something like that. ive never tried it yet. most of my research on colloid silver and hydrogen peroxide came from the cure zone site. you can find more products and ask questions there so it would be of more help then i.
acne.org is also an awesome site as well as http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/ i buy most of my products from these guys(expensive but good quality stuff)and they have a awesome forum. ive figured out what i need to do to fix my hyperpigmentation from these guys. they also have several topics on teen acne.
as for prices im not good with that. im canadian so i look at everything from that angle. plus i normally shop online so i dont know what it would cost in store. right now my acne/hyperpigmentation treatment is coming close to 500 bucks US(and im not too sure if thats for 1 month or 3 month supply). Murad system costs abut 30bucks(online) for a one month system (US). COlloid Silver (in store )costs about 15-50 bucks canadian. liquid Oxygen costs about 12-30 bucks US online. hydrogen Peroxid (3%) and baking SODA you can get anywhere for cheap.
steph, i hope i was of some help to you. and dont worry about asking me anything. im glad to be of some help

I know you asked for herbal advice...
January 25 2006, 6:21 PM
but I did not have acne in high school but I did get it in College, I have since found that a product called benzamyacine (sp) which you can get through your doctor is my lifesaver. Luckily I did not have much scars but the ones I did have are getting smaller as well. As far as scarring goes I have found a product called Mederma works really well. A friend of mine was biten by a dog on her face, the doctors told her she would need to have plastic surgery to lessen the scarring, we gave her mederma and now you can barely tell she was biten.
Angela, I also have that problem on my arms, does your daughter have red spots that sometimes break into whiteheads or just whiteheads. I have some it is so terrible I refuse to wear sleeveless t-shirts. Someone told me it is a Vitamin A deficiency but I keep forgetting to have my doctor look at it.

SugarQ, thanks, but it sounds like you are still batteling with your acne too, I always thought it would go away after puberty but I am still getting those darn spots it is really annoying.
Cutiepie, I do get spots on my back and arms as well, if you have something that you apply to your face try using it on your arms as well, that should help it, I always use my facial wash in the shower to scrub my back and arms and it keeps the spots at bay.

Steph, you very welcome, and thanks for that tip, this thread has really helped me out as well so thanks for starting it, there is a lot of stuff on here I haven't heard about before and I will definatly check it out and see what I can use for myself.
On another thought, I always had really soft nails and my hair always split at the ends and I am not sure what has helped but either taking the vitamins, herbs, silicea or even that kidney and liver cleanse has totally improved both, and I think that my problem might have been related to my hormone imbalance as well.
So maybe if you give your daughter a multivitamin a day she will feel better as well, just try and make sure she isn't allergic to any of the vitamins so that her spots don't get any worse.
I was just so amazed last night when I felt my nails and I just couldn't bend them at all, they are totally strong, they feel a bit like the plastic ones now, and my split ends are better too.
I think a hormone imbalance can cause a lot of other problems in your body, I have really weak connective tissue as well and have read that that is related, so if your daughter does have a hormonal imbalance it is definatly good to find out so you can try and supplement her as well if she is showing any mineral or vitamin deficiencies, you can get her tested for those too at the same time as the hormone test.
Let us know how she gets on if you don't mind sharing, it would be good to know if she has an imbalance, and if so we might be able to give another couple of tips that might help her.
Take care,
Lisa

cutiepie3,
Yes my daughter has them on her arms and on her cheeks. I try to get her to use a loofah in the shower but she's 12 and always "forgets" I'm sure that when she is older it will bother her enough that maybe she will take care of it. The ones on her face bother her alot and she does wash everyday. She also has many, many blackheads on her nose and her chin. Her and my older daughter get HUGE blackheads in their ears. I think that is from all of the products they use on their hair. i'm going to have to get some of that Mederma for her, she has alot of scars from bug bites. She plays outside all of the time and at dusk there is alot of no-see-ums and they eat her alive. That she is VERY embarrassed about. We live in Florida so she wears shorts about 9 months out of the year, actually more, she was in shorts today so she will be happy about trying that.

And taking the time to look into it for me, Lisa:thanx again and the cleanse may be a great idea,I'd been pondering that idea myself so as soon as I can get the "ok" for her age I will go forward, hopefully a cleanse in combo with a new skin routine will better her chances!

Hi guys,I know u both r interested in this too so I started google searching some of the treatments that were mentioned here and I'll tell u Lisa I cant thanku enough 4 mentioning ur hormone imbalance and the BCP/S.Palm link,I REALLY think that could be my daughters issue and ur's too Angela!I'm not gona jump into anything but its given me some hope and a place to start!I dont know if u ever tried "sulfur" Lisa but it seems worth a try,I only was able to get basics on it so far but Im gona keep researching it,it looks like u can get it otc or Rx.The " colloidal silver" seems effective BUT the "quack watch" site?? said some VERY SCARY stuff about it and it seemed very likely that most of it was not only possible but TRUE (including causing death) SugarQ,I know every expert has a diff opinion on stuff but PLEASE b careful if u ever use that stuff!Well, I'll let u both know if I find anything else that might interest u guys!

Steph you are welcome, I am glad if I could help. I often wish that my mom had realised more how much my spots affected me and had looked into it more, I think it is great that you realise how bad it is for her and that you try to help her.

Just recently I've heard of vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) being used to treat acne, although most people who have used it think that it only works in very high doses. I think it's definitely an option which should be considered.

Some people think that fenugreek is a good anti-acne treatment, based on their experience, but others say it made their acne worse.
