Are Wild Yam and Huai San the same thing?

Are Wild Yam and Huai San the same thing?
November 2 2007 at 7:31 AM Sarah (no login)

I keep hearing that wild yam is very good for NBE and hormone balance generally. But here in Asia, I can only find Huai San. It's long and grows in the ground, with lots of roots. The skin is the same color as potatoes. After peeling, the inside is white and slimy. Is this the same thing as the famed wild yam that I should be consuming a lot of for NBE purposes? Thanks.

I have been wondering about that, too.
I think they are pretty much the same. I read in TW's forum, there are many kinds of "san yau/huai san", there are brown, purple, white. I think the white ones are "japanese type" some people call it "japanese naga". but that's the only kind I can fimd so far in asain market, they mark it "huai san", though. From what I read, only the white ones you can use to make wild yam milk, the other kind you need to cook them. Hope this helps.

I don't think it is the same species of yam, but perhaps they are very similar.

Wild Yam is Dioscorea Villosa and Huai Shan or Chinese Yam is Dioscorea Polystachya, so yes they are related.

In Asian stores I've seen nagaimo (strange looking potato) and wondered if that's the same as naga. Ask for nagaimo.

naga is some type of wild yam i think, in asain supermarkets they usually call it "huai-shan", there are different colors, brown, purple, white. i have only seen the white ones in US so far, it looks like a long white stick about arm size with "hair" on it. if you peel it, it's very gluey. you can peel and chop then put in freezer, no need to thaw before use. see this link.

P.S. if you want to make naga milk, you need to use white ones, i read purple and browns need to be cooked.

I'm sure that naga and nagaimo are the same (japanese yam or mountain yam).

It's definitely a yam and not a potato.

Hello Tiger Lily: I have a question on your program for boobie healthy food, what is naga? I couldn't find it in any dictionary. Do you have a link to the Taiwan forum? Are messages written in Chinese? Also the borage (Liu Li Ju), I couldn't find it in the chinese grocery store here (US), maybe it's called another name?

here is the picture link.

it's also called "huai shan" in asain market or chinese herb shop.

the japanese naga (white one) can be blend w/ milk in blender, but the brown ones must be cooked. naga pork short rib soup is good boobie soup. Smile

Great! Thanks a lot for sharing the info. Now I know what naga is, yes I liked it a lot, especially cooked with short spare rib. With your experience, do you think working on your pressure points help? It's hard to find these spots though. Also, many girls on the Taiwai forum talk about "Mu Gua"-- green papaya, are they green on the surface or green inside? Those papaya I bought from supermarkets are either ripe or close to ripe, the inside are brown red with black seeds. Is this the fruit you guys are using as NBE food? Thanks again.

the green papaya is not ripe yet, so the skin is green. u should be able to find it in asain supermarkets, it's kinda light green/white inside even the seeds r white sometimes. it's okay if inside is a bit yellow. the ripe ones taste funny to make soup.
plus the green ones work better for boobie soup. green papaya pork rib or leg soup r both very helpful. Smile

i think the pressure points work very well, but i had problem finding them, too. but usually one inch around the point still has some effectiveness. Smile best drink some warm water after u do the pressure points for detox reason.
