faerycat gave me a very good site about progesterone that i liked very much
http://lammd.com/A3R_brief_in_doc_format...#Functions
READ THIS:
Natural progesterone is obtained by extracting diosgenin from wild yams and then converting this component into natural progesterone in the laboratory. Natural progesterone is referred to as natural because it is the identical molecule to that which the human body manufactures. Such yam-derived natural progesterone should not be confused with "yam extracts" that are commonly sold in health food stores. Our body easily converts natural progesterone into the identical molecule made by the body. It cannot convert the "yam extracts" into progesterone. There is no evidence that such "wild yam extract" is converted into progesterone once it enters into the human body and unlike natural progesterone, no conclusive formal studies have ever been conducted that identifies any particular benefits from "wild yam extracts".
THIS IS WHAT I HAVE READ BEFORE AND HAD QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WILD YAM. TO USE THE PROGESTERONE IN THE WILD YAM IT MOST BE PROSSESED IN THE LAB FIRST, JUST TAKING THE HERB WONT WORK.
No known side effects exist when using natural progesterone in physiological amounts (20 - 30 mg a day for women and 6-10 mg a day for men) under normal conditions. It is therefore very safe. But as with most substances, too much can cause problems. Too much progesterone is actually counterproductive, as chronically high dose of progesterone over many months eventually causes progesterone receptors to turn off, reducing its effectiveness and may lead to toxic side effects.
Excessive progesterone is normally caused by the excessive built up of progesterone in the body. This is more commonly seen in those who are self-administering topical progesterone cream in the wrong area. Progesterone cream should be applied to areas of the body that have good circulation but not high in fat. These areas include the wrist, back of the neck, and under part of the upper arm. Areas such as the abdomen, buttock and breast are high in fat and will retain progesterone faster than other parts of the body.
SO DONT ADD THE PROGESTERONE CREAM ON YOUR BREAST IT MAY LEAD TO EXSESS PROGESTERONE, NOT GOOD.
Natural progesterone can be administered orally, topically, sublingual or by injection. Oral administration is relatively ineffective as it is quickly metabolized in the liver. Injection is very effective, but can cause irritation to the injection site and it can be quite painful. To achieve physiological dose (and not the higher pharmacological dose), the best way is sublingual or topical. Progesterone is easily absorbed by the skin and is 5 to 7 times more effective in reaching the blood stream than oral forms of progesterone. In other words, 100-200 mg. of oral progesterone is needed to obtain the equivalent benefit of 20-30 mg. of trans-dermal progesterone. Sublingual progesterone offers the best and most direct delivery route, as it is well absorbed directly into the blood stream. However, the required alcohol based for sublingual drops may not be tolerated by some.
Salivary level goes up in 3 to 4 hours and is washed off by 8 hours and blood level goes up in a matter of a few weeks, with some women reporting benefits in a few days.
For best stabilization of progesterone absorption and effectiveness, natural prosterone should be taken or applied in divided doses, two to three times a day.
SO THE PROGESTERONE IS BEST ABSORBED AND MORE EFFECTIVE BY ADDING IT TO THE SKIN.

You may also want to check an herb called Agnus Castus (also called Chasteberry or Vitex) it regulates estrogen/progesterone ratios in cases of estrogen dominance. I'm currently trying to decide if I should go with the cream or this herb as I'm not seeing any progress in my NBE venture and I'm almost on my 4th month.

EVE MEMBERS Wild Yam vs. Prog. cream September 30 2006, 2:23 PM
Hi tms81 : )
If you are POSITIVE you've got progesterone deficiency/estrogen dominance, then using prog. cream can help. My advice is, just make sure you do your research on how and when to use it properly, e.g. body places / days of the cycle / how long in overall you should apply it : )
You should be safe using Progesterone Cream in addition to Wild Yam, according to what I've read, have a look at the following regarding wild yam:
"Wild Yam: Hormone Balancing and Breast Enlargement"
Creams, lotions and nutritional supplements with Wild Yam extract are a big hit now. They are recommended as a natural solution to hormonal problems and for breast enlargement.
- How do they work, and can Wild Yam really help?
Hormonal system is a complicated mechanism that regulates the way your body functions. Food, stress, even day schedule can affect this system and, by that, the way you look and feel. Because it is impossible to discuss all aspects of endocrine system in one article, I will briefly cover oestrogen and progesterone - two hormones whose balance is so important in a woman's body.
Oestrogen is a name for a group of hormones that take part in regulating woman's reproductive system. It is produced by ovaries. As soon as an ovary releases an egg, it starts making oestrogen to prepare (thicken) the inner lining of the uterus for pregnancy.
Progesterone is a hormone that is produced by the follicle after ovulation. It keeps the inner lining of uterus ready to receive a fertilized ovum, and later provides the nurturing for the development of the embryo. If the egg was not fertilized, progesterone encourages the uterus to shed the lining, and the result is menstruation flow.
If the body lacks oestrogen, it uses progesterone to produce more oestrogen. On the other hand, progesterone counteracts the effect of oestrogen. The key is the balance of these two hormones. Too much of either one can cause health problems.
Most women experience lack of progesterone, not oestrogen. In addition to oestrogen made by the body, we receive doses of oestrogen with meats and dairy (farm animals are given this hormone to gain more weight). Symptoms of oestrogen dominance are irregular menstrual flow, hot flashes, cramping, mood swings, migraines - to name a few. Excess oestrogen is also associated with endometrial problems, including endometrial cancer. Sufficient levels of progesterone can prevent these problems. Interesting enough, in one study patients who were given natural progesterone showed an increase in bone density, which means that progesterone prevents and even reverses osteoporosis.
Natural progesterone supplements are used to balance oestrogen. Natural progesterone has a structure similar to that of human progesterone and is made form plant fats; one of such fats is diosgenin. Wild Yam is rich in diosgenin, so it became the most popular source of natural progesterone.
However, it is a common mistake to think that Wild Yam constituents are converted into progesterone by a human body. It does not happen. Progesterone can be derived from a Wild Yam plant, but only in a lab.
- So why do people still find Wild Yam creams helpful?
Diosgenin found in Wild Yam is a phytoestrogen, and it closely resembles human progesterone. Due to this similarity, body reacts to it as if it were progesterone.
Because they are not the same as human hormones, phytoestrogens are far less potent which results in slower effect but safer use. Phytoestrogens do not cause any side effects. Unlike oestrogen which, when in excess, is associated with endometrial cancer, phytoestrogens do not evoke cell growth.
- Many people question the effectiveness of topical application.
Our skin has the ability to absorb elements that come in contact with it. These elements travel with the blood flow or accumulate in tissues. Nicotine patches, essential oil blends work this way. The benefits of it are obvious: nutrients and vitamins do not travel through the digestive system and liver, where they can be broken down and lose their effect. Diosgenin becomes nearly useless after it goes through the liver.
On the other hand, when it is applied to such areas as breasts, inner thighs, belly, it easily penetrates the skin. When it is accumulated in breast tissues, it makes fat cells a little bigger, which adds fullness and roundness to the breasts. It does not increase the number of cells, therefore there is a limit to size increase, and the increase itself depends on the amount of fat cells already present.
After phytoestrogens get into the blood flow, they cause mild estrogenic effect. In other words, they "draw attention" of cell receptors and lock on them preventing real oestrogen from producing significant and often undesirable effect. That is why women who suffer from PMS, cramping, menopausal discomfort will benefit from Wild Yam cream. Before the breast enlargement effect was discovered, Wild Yam had been used to treat these complaints for hundreds of years.
Whether you want to balance your hormones, or to add fullness to the breasts, Wild Yam cream can be a part of the solution. The results will depend on your actual hormone levels. Sometimes additional food supplements will be necessary for hormone balancing and faster results.

EVE MEMBERS Prog. cream - some extra info September 30 2006, 2:37 PM
I am going to forward to you some bits and pieces regarding the prog. cream, just some thoughts from what I've read, I will also pass you a couple of online articles on how the cream should be used in case it helps you (this info I have posted again sometime in the past):
The Flat2Fab book suggests that prog. cream can be used before starting NBE (or during NBE breaks) for just 7 days before our period, in order to get rid of excessive hormones. (This information is also on the "Newcomers Start Here" thread: "Info to all newbies".) However, I have read that progesterone applications may require 3 months of use before benefits are experienced...hmmm...
Now in general, prog. cream is recommended for treatment of PMS and post- or peri-menopausal women...
My opinion is that its use during NBE wouldn't harm, in fact it would be beneficial AS LONG AS WE KNOW we are progesterone deficient or estrogen dominant...
CAUTION:
"Excessive progesterone is normally caused by the excessive built up of progesterone in the body. This is more commonly seen in those who are self-administering topical progesterone cream in the wrong area - Progesterone cream should be applied to areas of the body that have good circulation but not high in fat. These areas include the wrist, back of the neck, and under part of the upper arm. Areas such as the abdomen, buttock and breast are high in fat and will retain progesterone faster than other parts of the body.
Absorption of progesterone from topical application is about 20-30% for the first day. A residual amount is left behind at the site of application, and this can accumulate in the subcutaneous fat tissue over time."

The Wild yam cream cannot help with progesterone deficiency though...
Are you having second thoughts on using a progesterone cream?
I have been thinking about this too...From hormonal tests (those listing the relevant symptoms) I could have low prog./estrogen dominance, however it is just a possibility, so I am very sceptic...I wish I could afford a full hormone lab test (saliva), so I could know for sure and not mess with my progesterone and other hormones for no reason...
Still interested in this though, so plz keep me posted if you decide to proceed with the prog. cream...

PS. The links I gave you above on Progesterone have some really good stuff about when and how to use the prog. cream, especially the 2nd one, it even gives an example on how to rotate it from one body place to the other from one day to the next...

I think using the wild yam cream is the safer route for you at the moment, this is what I would do too, using a prog. cream feels a bit too "drastic" as you directly mess with your progesterone levels. If the wild yam cream proves no good (I would probably give it 3 whole cycles before I draw any conclusions), then progesterone cream is always an option.

Ohkay, I'm going to bump this as well because I read something interesting in this thread...
"Progesterone is a hormone that is produced by the follicle after ovulation. It keeps the inner lining of uterus ready to receive a fertilized ovum, and later provides the nurturing for the development of the embryo. If the egg was not fertilized, progesterone encourages the uterus to shed the lining, and the result is menstruation flow."
....Then wouldn't it be a good idea to continue and take progesterone producing herbs [if you are estrogen dominant and taking that] like Vitex until your period arrives and switch to taking an estrogenic herb for a week until your period is fully over since during your period, it is already producing progesterone... so taking an estrogenic herb would just even it out because otherwise you'd be taking a bit too much progesterone. I'd think doing so would 'cause breast growth.

Still interested in this though, so plz keep me posted if you decide to proceed with the prog. cream...

i want to use the progesterone crem but i am just afraid that maybe i not have a low progesterone lewel and making things worse. because just taking a simple test on the internet is not good enough. But as you said just taking the progesterone cream one week before my period insted of two weeks as i was thinking about seems okey. think i am gonna give it a try. Where can i buy it?

I really understand what you are talking about...mood, stress, same here, I so feel for you and I know how hard it can be for ourselves and our loved ones...
Hasn't the wild yam cream helped at all with PMS? It is supposed to do so...
I hope it gets better for you very soon tms81...
I am currently on a break because of my high stress levels, I thought that all this stress and my psycological state in general at this stage of my life just won't let anything good happen to me NBE-wise...
PS. The links I gave you above on Progesterone have some really good stuff about when and how to use the prog. cream, especially the 2nd one, it even gives an example on how to rotate it from one body place to the other from one day to the next...
Hope it helps, keep us posted plz : )
You've got my best wishes tms81, take care x x x x

Which country? I'm in the UK, would it be any help if I gave you some links where you can order it from?
Thing is I agree with you on that you should not mess with your prog. levels unless it is too obvious you suffer from a deficiency...
What was the outcome of the test, possible/probable/certain? i.e. did you have the majority of the symptoms???

i have not tried wild yam cream just the herb. i have used the herb for one month, i got moody as usually but i got no cramps tis time so i had some effect. but if the cream is better than the herb i want to try the cream instead. i feel like progesterone may be the answer for me. But i get a little confused about what is best wild yam cream or use progesterone cream. Think i am gonna try wild yam cream first and see if it helps me with my moods.
Thanks a lot for all your support Helen it is so good to have someone to talk too

i had some of them, think it was probably. I think stress has a lot to do with it too. But it all startet i had my son. I cant take any burth controll that contains hormones, i get very depressed. Tought wild yam cream would not be as strong as taking progesteroone cream and more safe..

It's a pleasure talking to you tms81, I look forward to hearing how this goes for you x x x x

hehe i noticed that, yes i really liked talking to you and will keep you posted. I have a feeling that the cream will work since the herb has already worked for my cramps. I will take the cream in my lutheral phase. Have a nice day. Hug

I am still hesitant to use the progesterone cream too, but still am thinking about it. I actually have some that I can use. It's just, do I want to... I have the same thoughts that you both do.

Also, is there a difference between oestrogen and estrogen? Because from what was posted again in this thread... it seems I also have a dominancy in oestrogen as well.
