Fennel seed taste advice needed!

Okay so I love drinking fennel tea and the scent and flavor do not bother me at all. However today I bought some fennel seeds, I thought I could try fit a teaspoon or half one in on the days I don't have time to drink tea but boy was I suprised by the difference in flavors! The tea is like licorice and just nice and mild... but eating just a few seeds was so overwhelming to my senses!

So for those of you that eat the fennel seeds, how do you go about masking the intense flavor when you bite through the dry seeds?

You can swallow them with a glass of juice or water to avoid chewing them. Then you hardly notice the flavour.

Well your idea (about swallowing them whole) got me thinking when I was having yogurt today so I poured a teaspoon in with it... It's hard to make my mouth not bit through something hard but I managed to get it all down without any of that strong fennel taste coming through

Thanks Smile

I don't take any herbs or anything so I may be talking rubbish, but I always thought to get the nutrients out of seeds you had to chew them. Some seeds if you shallow them whole, pass out of your body without being broken down.

I have whole fennel seeds but plan on grinding them up before taking them. I think the previous poster is right about the seeds not being completely digested. Sort of like the difference between whole flaxseed and ground flaxseed. Walmart has inexpensive coffee grinders that are great for that purpose. I use mine a lot for all my herbs and stuff.

Mine are kinda in between but moreso greenish... and darn it all! is what I have to say about the seeds not being absorbed Sad

I don't want to chew them its so awful... I'll have to find a way to crush them first.

What I've been doing is grinding the seeds into powder (just as frostedmint suggested), although my grinder doesn't grind it too finely, there are still little tiny pieces of the seeds and powder. I'll just add enough water to mix with the powder so it's drinkable, about 1/4 cup water then down the hatch. I also drink the wild yam and fenugreek with it. The fenugreek I purchased in powder form, which really saved time and money. Though the wild yam I have it in capsules, I drink it because it doesn't taste so awful. I want to minimize swallowing so many pill/capsules a day.

All the herbs that Eve took were in dried and powdered form and she ate them with either yoghurt or mashed potato (except for the teas).

My whole fennel seeds are greenish and my ground fennel is brownish. I thought all fennel was the same but I could be mistaken. I don't think there is a right or wrong type just that ground is better for absorption and you won't need to take as much. Hope that helps!

Oh,that is a relief.lol i thought the the brownish ones are dried and by that lack the main substances we need for nbe.I think the brown ones taste way better than green ones.

Well I remember a long time ago when I first started buying fennel teas that asked if there was a difference between light and dark fennel seeds because the one I had bought said it was "blonde" fennel seeds or something like that...

so yes I suppose they are all equally good just of a different variety
