Ideas? Advice? Saw palmetto & massage for now...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello all
I have been reading this forum for a few weeks now, doing research and seeing what results you all have gotten with different methods. I have to say, it is a lot to digest and often confusing--and I am a bit discouraged because no single treatment has yet emerged as something that has worked consistently for a variety of people, whether it is pumps or herbs or everything in between. Many of the suggestions here I have already been following as part of a program to clear up my acne once and for all--it was through researching for that condition that I came across saw palmetto and it's other effects, and then this forum. I have been on a healthy diet full of protein and veggies and fruits, plus lots of water, low carb, low sugar, no caffiene, no smoking, very little alcohol, for over a month now (and I have always been pretty health conscious, so it wasn't a huge change for me, I am just a lot more strict about my diet and especially imbibing now.) I also exercise several times a week and take plenty of vitamins recommended as part of my skincare regimen (A, E, D, C, Fish Oil, B complex, glucosomine for joint health). I have recently started Tiger Lily's massage methods (ouch!) and taking saw palmetto, started on 450 mgs and have upped it to 900mgs this week. I believe that if I do have a hormone imbalance it would be excess androgens, which it is my understsanding that saw palmetto also helps by regulating DHT levels. In addition I practice Creative Visualization as presented by Shakti Gawain in her book of the same title, but I have a few questions for you all:

What is the average weight gain on saw palmetto? And why would it specifically cause cellulite? My understanding is that cellulite is largely hereditary and also influenced by toxins that are stored in fat cells, but I have seen several posts in these forums that say saw palmetto causes cellulite and that once you have it it's there to stay. I cannot find any other info on the web about cellulite and saw palmetto, just the possibility of minimal weight gain. I am not terribly concerned about gaining a few pounds, but obviously would prefer to avoid it if I can, and definitely don't want cellulite (who does?) But is there any evidence other than the anecdotal offered here that it really causes cellulite? And if so, does anyone have an explanation for why this might be the case?

Does anyone see anything in the regimen I have described that might inhibit breast growth? I love my body the way it is, I am 31 and have one daughter, always been small breasted and after breast feeding they are even smaller, but still pretty and never a complaint from my lovers. I am opposed to surgery on principle, but would like to increase a cup size or more (I am currently almost a B, sz 36). Hope this is not too long or boring, just thought I'd solicit input. Also I am being cautious about taking too many supplememts at once until I see what works for me.

Saw palmetto does indeed add weight and contribute to cellulite. It because of the raised hormones that we get the cellulite, but saw palmetto, as much as I like it, seems to be really bad fror promoting cellulite. Weight gain can be anywhere from 5 to 20 pounds, really depends on the indiviual. I like Saw Palmetto, I had gorguous hair, and full lips, beautiful skin, I swear my eyes even looked alittle larger, my boobs had growth,,, but weight gain on my butt and waist was awful. Some herb formulations make you retain fluid too, and become gassy, so its really not a big mystery that a herb could cause so much havic. My question is,, How do men take Saw Palmetto for a swollen prostrate and not become overweight.??? Because here in Canada its on the shelves of every drug store for men, so someone is taking it.

Well, my diet has made me extremely gassy and I am trying to figure out a way to ward that off, apparently healthy veggies and high fiber foods are the worst for causing gas...as far as saw palmetto goes, does it raise hormone levels? I thought it balanced them. And did you retain any of your breast growth that you achieved when taking it? I am definitely feeling tenderness and tingling in my boobs already, don't know if that means growth or is just another side effect...if there are any other users of saw palmetto out there, pls respond, b/c so far this herb seems to be working but I do not want cellulite b/c I know that once you have it it's there to stay and I feel lucky to have the minimal amount I do at my age, especially since my mom has plenty so there's probably a genetic disposition there--argh! Also, if any respondents could give a run down on how much they gained and what their diet/exercise program was like...mucho gracias

Hi there,
Well, I'm using saw palmetto in my routine. I freaked out too when I heard about the weight gain and tried nettle root for a few weeks but my tingles stopped and I had no growth during that period. I decided to start back up with the SP and instantly my tingles returned. I have been taking it since last November, so I don't know if that's long enough to tell, but haven't noticed any extra cellulite. I don't know why SP does cause cellulite, but a few people have said it does - so maybe it depends on body chemistry/disposition. I have grown 1 1/2 inches since I started last november, and think have finally found the right combination for myself.

Here is some info about hormones and cellulite from good old wiki:

Hormonal factors
Hormones play a dominant role in the formation of cellulite. Although people believe Estrogen is the most important hormone and that it seems to initiate and aggravate cellulite, there has been no reliable clinical evidence to support such a claim. Other hormones including insulin, the catecholamines adrenaline and noradrenaline, thyroid hormones, and prolactin are all believed to participate in the development of cellulite.[1]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellulite

It seems to me that a number of these hormones are stimulated during NBE - so perhaps that can be the relation???

Either way you could always try dry brushing to stimulate the circulation around your thighs as a preventative measure. I'll probably try that in winter (it's summer here at the moment).

Just make sure your attentive to what your body tells you, every body is different.

Oh, also, I am taking 500mg of SP 3 x a day. And, I did gain 1kg (which I soon lost), I was actually trying to gain a little weight at the time (I think my protein shakes right before bed helped) I haven't been doing this lately so I think that's why I lost it. In other words, I don't think it was because of SP.

Anyway, hope this helps you a little!

Cheers,
Lilly

Thanks Lilly, this was very helpful! I re-visited my research and found that saw palmetto blocks the formation of DHT, the more potent form of testosterone, so that was what I was thinking of...I am going to stick with it as it seems to have multiple benefits for me and since I do work out and eat right I think I'll be okay. I also read that it stimulates appetite, and that's the kind of info I was looking for--to say something 'causes' weight gain without saying how (i.e. makes you more lethargic, increases appetite, makes you retain water, etc.) is misleading, because those things can be counteracted. And believe me you, I am already fighting the good fight against cellulite with dry brushing, scrubbing massage with exfoliants, internal cleansing and the like, so yes, I think I'll stay on top of that. Thanks for the encouragement, I am not looking for a miracle, just slightly larger, firmer breasts. And to everyone out there, this is a great forum, I have learned so much already--don't ever forget that women are beautiful in all their varied shapes and sizes and we are harder on ourselves than men will ever be! Don't let pop culture with it's relentless depictions of huge breasts discourage you from loving your body exactly as it is... Much love to all the ladies here!

I think it depends. I've been taking SP for a very long time now and I haven't noticed any strange weight gain or cellulite.

Absolutely no side effects for me from saw palmetto after 6 months of use. It depends on the person I guess.
