Advice on PM with hysterectomy?

#1

Maybe some of you who are more experienced with PM and the mysterious workings of cycles can help me out! Wink I'm getting tired of popping expensive BB pills for a year now, with NO new growth since early last fall (darn it Dodgy ), and I'd like to start PM when my BB supply ends in August. However, I have a special "complication." I had a hysterectomy almost two years ago, where my uterus and cervix removed, but I still have my ovaries. Obviously I don't have periods; but I really don't have any symptoms of ovulation either; so I don't know when or if I ovulate. When I start PM, would I be OK to take it every day? Or should I try to determine when/if I ovulate, and cycle it like everyone else? I guess I'm confused about what matters most about PM: the periods or ovulation? Anyone have any thoughts??? Huh

Hi,
I put hysterectomy in the search on this site and there was this link and another that was similar..

http://www.breastnexus.com/showthread.php?tid=8002&highlight=hysterectomy

I think you should private message or email Wahaika and ask more about your question.. this person in the link doesnt mention about having ovaries..so you may have even more of an advantage.. There are some women that took PM through the whole month but when ovulation started they just did a low dose.. I know you mentioned you dont ovulate.. I never charted/keep track of mine so I have no clue when I do..guess I have to start tracking.. I will keep looking for more info for you..k

Hey food for thought... how do the men do it then..

Thank you

Thanks, beachbumbythesea. Smile I do remember reading that post, and I believe she had a complete hysterectomy (ovaries removed too), so in that case she probably could just take PM every day like the men do. But since I still have ovaries, I'm kinda confused on whether or not ovulation without periods makes a difference. Sad I guess I could try taking PM every day (when my BB supply runs out in a couple months) and see if anything undesirable happens. I think I'm the only one on this board with this "problem." Sad So it'll probably require lots of trial and error. I'm 34, and I'm already taking things that SHOULD help, like GABA, HGH releaser, Neocell collagen I & III, MSM, quality multi-vitamins ... I guess only time will tell! Thanks, and good luck to you! Smile

Hi Twister mama,

I am somewhat of a novice. But here is what I think:

PM can cause infertility in women (when not used properly). The reason why some women use it for only part of the month is because they are trying to avoid this effect. If you have had a hysterectomy and don't plan on having any more children, then I think it would be ok to use it all month long. Not in as high doses as then men though (because you naturally, produce more estrogen than they do).

Now if you want to ensure that your ovaries continue to produce viable eggs, then you would have to cycle like the rest of us.

As to not having mood swings as a result of too much estrogen, I would say you have to listen to your body, until you find the right dosage for you.

My, half a cent.Smile

Thanks, Nila, that makes a lot of sense! I think I will start out at a lower dose to begin with and slowly ramp up until I feel something happening; and then stay at that dose every day of the month unless other bad things start happening. Thanks for the advice to both of you! Smile

Hey Nila or anyone that may now this,

Question/thought.. I am female but not really good in understanding how all this worksRolleyes OK.. Why does the estrogen level drops (is it before ovulation) does the estrogen go some where or is it more other hormones taking over, if the estrogen is going somewhere I am thinking to the ovaries to make the eggs and for the uterus to shed them and going to the breasts..? Just curious..

Hi Beachbum,

From the 1st day of menstruation to about the 14th day, there is a gradual rise in estrogen. After you ovulate, estrogen levels drop while progesterone levels rise. If the egg is not fertilized, this rise in progesterone is what will eventually lead to menstruation

Yes estrogen (along with other hormones) are necessary for the formation of the eggs

Ok.. wow..so much involved..Rolleyes well in my opinion.... Sorry one more question.. does ovulation happen after the 14th day?

Thank you for being patient with me.

I believe that is the general assumption, but there isn't a fixed day for every woman. Keep in mind that a normal menstrual cycle may be 28 - 35 days long.

Anyways, on my PM bottle, it says to take the pill(s)for the first day of the menstrual cycle to the fifteenth day and then stop. This probably works off the assumption that the woman will ovulate around that time.

Stopping the PM pills is to allow the drop in estrogen and surge in progesterone, that typically comes after ovulation.
