I had no luck with the rings, but maybe you will. The best padding that worked for me when I needed it was campers tape. You can buy it at any home improvement store. As far as never being able to use both, I wouldn't say that. There was times when moving up sizes where I could only do one at a time, so I would pump 30 min on each one daily. After a month or so I was able to get both on. The pumping helps widen your breasts to be able to do that.
